Olde Eynsford 3F in my GM .45 Mongrel
« on: October 14, 2013, 05:20:02 AM »
I tried the OE 3F out along with some regular GOEX 3F at the range on Friday in my recently finished Mongrel with a .45 GM barrel. For those not familiar "The Mongrel" started off as an Andrew Verner rifle but after contacting some expert builders and doing some research it was determined I was in way over my head. I then proceded over the last 9 months to build the nameless rifle that became the "Mongrel".
Anyways.......after 15 shots of various amounts of powder starting at 40 grs. I ended up using 65 grs. in each shot, .445 ball, .20 pilllow ticking, Hoppes #9 Plus for lube and the same powders in the pan. The 65 gr. charge seemed to be more consistant with both of them although the OE seemed to "crack" a bit more.

Having a new barrel with everything equal to the best of my abilities and taking my time to make sure it was correct, I didn't really see any noticeable difference in accuracy at 25 or 50 yards off bags but my own misses due to my lack of skills.
They were in a saucer size ring except for one using the OE. The same with the GOEX but 2 flyers ?
I did however see that the OE cleaned up easier and had less fouling than the regular GOEX.

I will do more tweaking as I believe I can do better. More reports to come.
Oh yeah I had a blast just getting out to the range, it had been awhile. ;D

Scout, sounds like you had a good day at the range. I can't think of nothing better to do on a sunday afternoon than shooting the old or should I say New smokepole. What better way to start smoothing up the rifling and try out a new powder at the same time. Keep us informed on your ongoing tests of olde eynsford.
