I may have fell into a deal. A friend has a Haynes rifle that has never been finished. It was started 25 years ago by an uncle.
I have never installed a release for the side open Bucks County. Can some one lend a hand>

This piece is curly maple , brass mounts, Getz swamped .50 cal. x 42", Siler inlet. I'd need to get a lock.
All for $300. Sound good or not?

Yes that's a good deal, even if somehow the stock were in shambles. Go for it and we can help with the PB release as you get to it.

Okay, I'm getting it. Now I haven't built for a while. And when I did they were 17th century guns and
early 18th century. Most from the Rifle Shop. Back when I had dealer props.
This will be a new trail. Going from 10ga. to 50 cal will be a trip. I used to even blacksmith parts.
Feels like a century ago instead of 20 years.

Here is one way to do a release for a side opening patch box

some would not bother with the bend of the rod just run it diagonally to intersect with the spring release not sure it makes that big of a difference.

Here's one of my Bucks County LRs that has a BC Pbox release w/ the push rod terminating under the toeplate. Quite simple compared to some releases.....Fred

Here's how I solved my A. Verner project...would have been nice to have the original to study, but of such is life!
I did not 'jog' my push rod for fear of not having enough wood for the lower butt plate screw.

Taylor....never thought of installing the opening spring as you have it....the spring is out of the way and isn't in the cavity. Next one will have your spring location...thanks....Fred

Here's my take on a Bucks release:

The catch spring is fastened to stock under the buttplate. I probably should add a kick open spring.
I think it is close to the original set up, maybe.

It seems that many of the originals that I have examined did not have any provision for a"pop open" spring. This was a bit of a curiosity, in that the boxes seemed to pop open without such a provision. Closer examination showed that the patch box lid was torqued slightly downward at the front upper edge. This did two things. It assured that the front of the box lid lay flat and tight into the inlet and provided tension against the latch at the rear of the box. This tension was sufficient to "pop" the lid open by a 1/2-3/4" more than enough to easily open the lid and access the contents of the box. As is often said K.I.S.S.

Plus the way Taylor sets it up puts the spring pressure at the latch, thus avoiding any stress or flexing on the box lid.

If I understand you correctly, the lid was intentionally slightly warped so that it was under tension at the catch when fully closed and acted as its own spring.

Finally got my parts. Going to need a large Siler lock. And trade double set triggers for single set up.
Lots of work ahead, but looks like it's going to be nice. Lots of curl. Patch box needs cut out inside and there are
no springs or release for it. Barrel is an A weight 50. So I was told. I have to cut in for sights which never have done.
Seen pics though. Well here we go .......

I couldn't find a left handed Bucks box, so I cobbled this one together.
It has a secret opening mechanism.

on further exam. this is an early Lancaster . The box looks more like a Dickert. The end near the butt plate has a small curved end piece making it stand up from butt. Not seen one like this.

Here is mine.

Not quite as traditional but it works well. One spring serves as release catch spring and kick-open spring.
