New powder horns
« on: November 10, 2013, 04:00:09 AM »
New to the site, and starting to make my gear. Here are 2 Buffalo horns I have completed, just posting to get some feedback on them. The small horn is 8" along the outside curve, 2 1/2 " at the base and holds @1/2 lb of FFFF, and the large horn is 11 3/8 " on the outside curve, 3" at the base and holds @ 3/4 lb of FF.
They have pine tapering cones inside with mesquite caps and turned mesquite plugs for the spouts. The pins are actually bamboo skewers for contrast. The large horn still has some of the white guard hairs as well for contrast. They have been hand rubbed with beeswax to shine the outsides, and coated with poly on the inside to make them airtight.

Buffalo horns are more difficult to work than cattle's horns, IMHO.  And yours look very nice.  Just a note:  horn is watertight without any coating, inside or out.  I seal my butt plugs with beeswax though just to be sure.

Art is not an object.  It is the excitement inspired by the object.

Thanks, I know the scale on them is pretty thick to get down to useable horn...  ;D  Also dont come into the house right after scraping.. apparently what I consider a mildly unpleasant smell is truly offensive to the better half....... ;D ;D

I have a few more raw horns, just not happy with the size. Would like to get some around 15-16" finished length and 3 1/2' at the base... Unfortunately I think they slaughter @ 3 years old or so and the horns just dont get much bigger in that time....

May have to try a flat horn or 2 now just to see which I like more....
