Hudson Valley fowler type gun
« on: December 20, 2013, 01:57:05 AM »
I started this gun a couple days ago. All I've done is inlet the barrel, started the lock inlet and slabbed off some wood. It's another barrel Salvo had, .750" bore by 1.375" round breech tapering to .900" at the muzzle by 48" long. Lock is the  English Fowling Gun lock by Davis. Butt plate & trigger guard are the Reeves Hudson Valley set. I'll make the pipes & side plate from sheet brass I reckon. Wood is more of the cherry I got in Western PA a few years ago.

Sorry for the phone pictures. It's the best I got and I'm certainly no expert photographer. In fact, I ain't no professional at none of this stuff but I do like to dabble. It keeps my hands and fingers from becoming nothing more than glove fillers.

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

Keb, Looks like you got a pretty good profile started and it's good you were able to find to find a barrel with that large a breech. It should make a nice lock and wrist area. Good luck with the build, looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

Cool. That is a beast of a breech!  Good luck with it, and keep us updated.

I have always liked this style.  I have never shouldered one.  I am curious if there are any precautions that need to be taken to insure that the wrist area is strong enough with such an exaggerated drop and heavy butt?

I made a 10 ga. Club Butt with quite a bit of drop & small wrist. It shoulders great and shoots good, too. I'm not worried about it breaking in half.

I made some more progress on this gun. I started shaping the butt. I had that belly a little fat and didn't want it like the other club butts I've made so I straightened the toe line out I think it looks much better like it is now. I also was looking at pictures of Hudson Valley guns. Most had longer barrels than my short 48" so I switched horses mid stream. I'm dropping the trigger guard I was gonna use and fashion the gun after an American made Brown Bess style type gun. I need a Bess side plate & maybe even pipes. I may go with my home bent up pipes. That day is a little ways off, it being xmas & all. I'm leaving in the morning for a family get together in central Michigan. 2/3 of my children & 4 of my 7 grands will be there. It'll be good to see them.

Mike Brooks: That trigger guard is yours if you want it. I'm not gonna use it.

Nice guns, feltwad, but I'm kinda going a different direction.

I've done a bit more on this gun since returning home from Michigan. I got the lock buttoned up, side plate drilled & holes champhered for lock mounting screws, trigger made & guard mounted. I was hoping to finish it before Alafia but it doesn't look like I am gonna make it.

I'm no photographer. My phone takes awful pics.

I don't think so.

I put the easy off to it today. It came out really red. I'm in the process of working it back now. No pictures yet though.
It has a knot hole in the butt :/

Actually near Birch Run. I don't like to say I'm in the Flint area. It's not a good place no more.
I don't know Dannis Priddey but have heard the name. I use to go to that little thing Bob Meyers put on in Midland. I'm sure our paths have crossed.

I got it done before Alafia. I'm calling it finished but I know I will still screw with it some. Well, I still gotta smooch the barrel. I like putting naval jelly on them. I like the gray finish it leaves. I also may scratch some squiggly lines on the side plate & butt plate tang. I'm on the fence on that one though.
Anyway, here's some pictures of which suck pretty good. I ain't no photographer, either.

Thanks. I spend maybe 10 - 12 hours a day at it when I'm working on one. I only do that cause I don't have a life & it keeps me occupied.
I started another one today :/ It's a 47" x 1.0" breech octagon to round x .56 caliber. I got the bbl channel roughed out & the rr hole routed & drilled. It's too dam cold out to do any more today.
