Jim's New Years Shoot
« on: January 02, 2014, 12:36:12 AM »
Jim had his New Year's shoot the 31st.  I think there were 11 shooters and 17 targets, which were orange-painted steel targets cleverly placed out in the brush to be partly hidden.  But some of us killed them all anyway.  Here are Carney, Lynn, Mark, George, Harry, Carole and Neill.

Jean sizing up the shot, Carl spotting.

The target is in the tall juniper in the center and it may be the dreaded crescent moon hanging from the tree.  It usually swung upon being hit and presented the next shooter with a very slim crescent profile.  I think Jean killed it anyway.

Terry probably hit it too.  These gals are good.  I think there were 3 left-handed shooters.

George hit it.

Jean and Carney.  Carney is also left handed, both shoot flintlocks.

Jim Goodman, whose .54 flinter lets you know a hit was made.

Lynn's little .40, which Neill made, always helps her get a good score.

Neill trying to find the other two targets across the canyon.  There is a tall "bugler" at the right edge of the bare cliff, blonde in color and life size.  But the next one is a hostile crouching in the brush, very hard to see, and the third is a mercenary soldier also crouched in the brush.  The range is "over 100 yards".  I think Carole and Lynn both hit all three with their little .40's, which go kinda "tink", but when my .54 Bridger hit it with 50 grains of Goex 3F, there is no mistaking the "clank".  I hit all 17 targets, but maybe someone else did, too.  It was very informal, no paper score kept.

Harry Harpoon and Jim Goodman at Jim's cabin.  My .54 Bridger Hawken in front.

Inside, Neill, Carl and Carole.

Check your guns at the door.

Somebody shot the course with a Coehorn? That'd be quite a challenge!

Yep. But for sure you'd know you hit your target!

Here are more of the rifles.  My Bridger Hawken, then Jim's .54, next I don't know, then Lynn's left handed flinter.

This is Carney's gear.  You can enlarge this by hitting Control and the plus sign.  Note the rawhide wrapped powderhorn and the woven gun sling.

I'll see Carney at our .22 gallery shoot Thursday night, I'll ask him to bring his horn and I'll get some photos of it and find out how it was made.

Great pictures. For the most part everyone looks very toasty in your outfits. Those orange targets you mention sure must be partly hidden, I couldn't see any of them in the pictures. Love it, keep it up.

frenchman, Carney brought his rawhide covered powderhorn to the gallery shoot tonight, but I'd forgotten my camera.  If we both remember, will get photos next week.  He told me who made it, but I will write it all down next time.

frenchman, Carney had the flu last week, will try for this week.  He is on this forum now, so when we get the pictures he can tell you about his horn.

Frenchman, Carney and I finally got horn and camera together.  He said the horn was made by Jim Rogers and Toby --? covered it with leather.

It takes a a lot of water to wet dried rawhide.  Ordinary use wouldn't affect it much.
