1 3/8 inch breech
« on: January 06, 2014, 06:03:07 AM »
I have a friend who is looking for a breech to fit a 1 3/8 inch octagonal barrel.  Could be old or new, hooked or what ever.  Any idea where one  might be found ?     Louie

I have made several of large size for the 8 bore and 4 bore rifles.
(And one for a 2 bore)
They are not hard to make.  I use a bolt of the correct size and thread, and that gets mated to a large piece of angle iron.  If the tang must be long it's simple to weld some steel on.
The angle iron forms a plate to come out tight to the breach end of the barrel after the plug is threaded in tight.  The top of the angle must align with a flat of the barrel.  The rest gets sawn off and filed to conform to the other flats and you leave a tang protruding to the back.   It's a lot of hand work, but not really hard to do.

I believe Pete Allan makes a 1 3/8 Hawken style breech.  May even have one somewhere, along with all the other stuff i have accumulated. Pete is your best bet though

I have attempted to contact Pete several time with no success.  Do you have current contact information?
Quality, schedule, price; Pick any two.

I've breeched a few 1 3/8" barrels using plugs made for 1" barrels. I altered them by welding a piece of crs on top of the tang & grinding vertical slots in the bottom to allow cold bending of the tang. I can't complain of my results.
