Why is education so painful?
« on: January 28, 2014, 07:00:37 AM »
Started inletting a lock and should have taken the lock panel area down a good 3/16" more than I had.  Thought I was gonna reach China before the bolster made it to the barrel.  Ugh!  Live and learn.  Guess I won't ever do that again.  The memory will be forever etched in my mind.   :D

3/16th more wood to remove, while painful, is a lot better than 1/16 too little wood on the panel. That would be painful.

I have a PHD from the School of Hard Knocks. Graduated at the top of the class. Tuition has been expensive and the degree will almost buy a cup of coffee along with a two dollar bill at the corner donut shop.  :P :o

Yes, but the lessons learned are learned well and not forgotten.

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

Try leaving an extra 1/2" of wood while fitting an English fowler butt plate to "practice inletting" on. Well over a month to finally get everything in and right, live and learn.

Now I find my stock blank wasn't completely seasoned and the metal is sitting proud of the wood. I am going to let things sit for a year or so for the wood to dry out and "get some practice" inletting the butt plate again.

Gentlemen, this is exactly why our generation understand the value of a lesson well learned the hard way. The new generation that is not allowed to fail, have to keep learning it over, and over, again. JMO.

I also learned that the hard way. Not only much longer time to inlet I ran into the problem of the plate fitting perfectly at the top but as it went deeper the wood to metal fit suffered! Same for buttplate extensions. Now I try to take the wood down to where I have a max of 1/16" above the metal, preferably 1/32"

EDUCATION!!? It's a threat to stupidity. At least that was the impression I was given
when we moved to WV in 1946 from Chicago.A little boy that was good at math, liked to read
and at that time was fairly fluent in German was a PITA to his peers whose main goal was
to get an old Ford and a job at a gas station and quit school at 16.Education indeed.

The long, and short, of it is "stupid should hurt" so you don't do it again.
