English 1780-1820 pistol patterns, plans or drawings?
« on: February 01, 2014, 12:00:06 AM »
Does anyone know a source for some good plans for an English pistol to be built around a Bob Roller petit Manton style lock?  Anxious to start on this project.

I can not figure out how to use the New Photobucket, contact me thru this site & I can email you photos of a  Richards flint pistol, half-round brass barrel .61 cal 9-3/16" long. www.horstheld.com had a near duplicate for a long time.

Or a pair of overcoat pistols by Wogdon, circa 1775 cal .45 8" French style barrels.

JC,
Thanks.  Looking forward to receiving the info.  My regular email is eddillon at neconos dot com.
Should be easier to send data to that email.
Cheers.

Hi Ed,
I don't know what Bob's "Manton" lock looks like so I cannot suggest a period style because English pistols changed quite a bit between 1780-1820.  For example, dueling pistols largely transitioned from fullstock guns with well balanced octagon barrels to halfstock pistols with heavy octagon barrels.  The classic "Georgian" horse pistol with ornate buttcap mostly disappeared during that time in favor of simpler over coat and military-style pistols. See if you can find a copy of Neal's "The Manton Gunmakers" or his "Great British Gunmakers 1740-1790" in a local library.  Those volumes will give you a good sense of British pistols during that time.  Also visit www.flintlockcollection.com.  I think I can scan the plans I drew for the Wogdon pistols pictured below.  I used lock castings from Blackley's and Rayl swamped barrels. They were scaled from an original pair but modified a little to fit my brother's hand.  The style may not be appropriate for your Manton lock if it is a late Manton style.

I get the external parts for the L&R small Manton and make a
benchcrafted mechanism for them. I also made a number of them
on the same pattern that I owned the moulds for.The castings from
these older moulds were good but the newer ones from L&R are better
and to me,better stands on the shoulders of good enough.

Dave,
Thanks for the info.  I have both of the books mentioned.  Nothing really trips my trigger.  Bob is sending some Boutet photos to me.  Now that trips my trigger!  Nicholas Boutet was the best, IMHO.  If you are curious about Bob's lock work here is the one I received on Wednesday.  Haven't touched the outside finish yet.  These photos are as it came out of the box.  Great work, Bob
