RCA #4 questions
« on: February 06, 2014, 01:36:40 AM »
I'm trying to gather some information about RCA #4, particularly the barrel dimensions and photos of the front sight.

RCA gives only the length (19") and breech measurement (1 9/32"), but comments that the rifle has "substantial flare at the muzzle."   In the photos, I can't make out a front sight at all.

Thanks,
Jim

Just a guess, but I know Ed Rayl has recreated a lot of these rifle barrels. He might have dimensions on file.

Thanks, I hadn't thought of that.  If I build a version of this rifle, I figured I'd buy a straight octagon barrel and spend some "quality time" drawfiling it to the dimensions.  At this point I'm still playing with sketches.

From the pics, it looks like the "swell" at the muzzle is maybe 3/16" or so larger than the breech measurement.  Lacking actual measurements of the swamp, I figured to go with the original breech measurement of 1 9/32", tapering to 1 5/32" about 11 1/2" from the breech, then flaring to 1 15/32" at the muzzle.
