New Hunting Bags
« on: January 26, 2009, 02:43:00 AM »
I had the good fortune of attending the CLA show last year, where I bought T.C. Albert's hunting pouch book.  Since then I have been trying my hand at some bags. I have made 7 bags to date. Comments and suggestions are welcome.  I want to improve my skills.

They all look great, but I would vote for the black one as well.  Nice job on all.

Offhand I'd say you are a quick study and you have talent!  Well done!  What ever else you do - keep it up.  Must say I'd vote for the black one as well - but then I'm partial to black.  Nice bag.  You seem to have mastered the art of sewing these things pretty well in a very short time.  You ever done this sort of thing (leather work) before?

I was lucky enough to receive the black bag as a Christmas present. I'm hoping he buys a book on gun building next year.

Thank you for all the kind words of encouragement.

Brian, I have never worked with leather before.  Tim's book was the extent of my education in leatherworking.  A special Thank You to T.C. Albert for writing his book.  I guess after all this positive feedback, I will call Wickett and Craig and order another side of leather.

rf50cal (Dad),  I see a few more bags in your future before I tackle a gun for you.

fr50cal   Your mistake was not buying him a rifle building book for christmas, maybe you should give him one and tell him you forgot you give him it ;)

Very nice work.  I really like the squarish looking bag.  Looks like you took to bag making like a duck to water.  Keep up the good work.

Eric,

I looked at a couple of your bags at Lewisburg.  Very nice.  Have you done any with  beavertail flaps?  har to believe you have no prior experience working with leather.

Eric though a new poster here I have BP in my veins for more years than I wish to recall. The investment in that book has payed off, those are extremely good bags and there are a couple pictured that have me drooling. Keep up the good work and let us know when you are ready to part with a few.  :o

Kunk, I have not tried one with a beavertail flap, yet, but I will very soon.

Ezekial, I put 3 bags up for sale on the "For Sale" Board.

Eric,  What weight leather are you using?  Just curious, been thinking about trying my hand at making one.
Thanks,
Bill

I used 3-4 ounce for the straps and bodies and 2-3 ounce for the welts.
