Gentlemen:  In the early 60's and the entire 70's anyone using one of the first 'How to Books' on building a muzzle loader probably had an experience with Potassium Permanganate. It was the suggested coloring agent at the time. Medically it was used to treat stomach ailments, however, it is no longer sold or perscribed but it definitely turned curly maple green after a period of time and after the rifle was finished.

Not sure of PP's relationship with the other chemicals listed in this valuable post but I still have that rifle. Shoots great but looks like $#*! and requires a lot of explaining.
