Table shoot barrel?
« on: February 23, 2014, 08:56:02 PM »
I would like opinion on the best size table shoot barrel. I would put it on a Charlie bowers action. More than likely .45 cal. Thanks for the input!

Coltin,
There was a great array of barrels at the shoot yesterday, as in the past. There are a lot of fellows shooting their offhand rifles, both 1/2 stock and full stock, with 36' to 42" barrels and varying calibers big to little. I am among those that "think" the smaller calibers, .36-.38-.40 are the way to go. I am finishing a table rifle wit a 34"X1 1/8" Ed Rayl barrel in .40 with a 1-56 ROT. As in chunk shooting you want a stable rifle when it is on the table rest. Do not forget that there is a 13# weight limit.

Colton, like smokinbuck said. I would add that a longer sight radius would be helpful. Any cal. from 36-50 would get the job done. The trick is getting as close to that 13# limit for stability. That includes sights!

See you at the next one, Mike

Thanks guys. I was think 40" 1 1/8" .45 cal. My action weight in at a touch over 3 lbs. so lookin for a barrel bout 9.5 lbs. I not look at a lot of weigh for sight bc I will probably use open sights. Mike by chance do you know what type of material Paul Griffith used for his sights. Just got a set from him this fall and would like to duplicate. Thanks!

32-  36 -38-40 45   A NICE LIGHT LOAD NO RECOIL.  PAUL GRIFFIth   was making THE IDEAL ONE A 38 THAT SHOT  a .375 ball and 35 grains of 3ff swiss  , bill disboro just cut  5 -4 leg x and won 1st in 5 of the 10 matches shooting a 45 cal dehass he won at bevels last year. he was winning with a 40 wayne Jenkins barrel .now bill believes in a heavy load . we are  looking forward to mike m getting his 38cal griffth barrel on a small bowers action done..mr collier has done real well shooting his little 32 cal under 7 lb squirrel gun. it will drive you crazy but it is a ball.

Colton,
Contact Ed Rayl. He makes a great barrel and is still reasonably priced. 1-304-364-8269.

I ordered one from Wanye Jenkins. He's about a month behind so he hopes to bring it to York shoot.  ;D
