Thanks everyone,
I appreciate your responses, which have been very helpful.  I think I will go with a 5-6" vise, probably a Wilton bought on E-bay.  The bullet vises are beautiful but even used ones are well beyond my price range.  I need to get moving on this so I cannot really wait to find one at local auctions or barn sales.  Thanks for the suggestion of the Sawyer, Iloco, but I think that vise would be too massive for my set up although I well understand the value of a heavy massive vise.

Thanks again everyone for your insights.

Hi Folks,
I asked advice on a heavy duty vise and you all came through for me.  I owe you a follow up.  I bought a new Wilton 4.5" Tradesman vise on sale at a really good price.  I don't get really excited about vises but this one is beautiful and amazing, and it is made in the USA.  I've been using it for a week.  What a fine piece of equipment.  Thank you all.

It's hard to beat a good old American made product.  Congratulations on your purchase.  That Wilton should last a lifetime.
