Help, I'm stuck!!
« on: March 04, 2014, 08:00:24 PM »
I'm working on a Beck rifle from a blank. I was drilling the holes to pin the barrel and I broke the only long 1/16" drill I have!! The drill is about 6" long and came with the jig a bought from a ALR member(don't remember name). This stuff is impossible to find in Norway.  Please could some one send me 2-3 of replacements? A shorter 1/16" drill suitable for steel would also be great. If you use paypal I can send you the money without delay.

Best regards
Rolf

That is not a drill bit they stock at the local hardware store and would need to be ordered.  I just checked with Grainger and they ship to Norway. http://www.grainger.com/content/worldwide#view-europe

Check out this site. They offer what your looking for at a reasonable price. Not sure about shipping charges but they do ship out of the country.

That's one of David Rase's jigs and I am sure he can direct you to a source for the bits. I remember that they were aircraft bits.

Rolf,
Check with Dave Rase on this forum.  He is the fellow who made the fixture.  I broke off the small dia. bit in the fixture.  Dave quickly replaced the bit and the guide.  Could not find a finer guy to do business with!

Grainger and Mc Master-Carr won't sell to privat persons abroad.
MSC sells only to USA, Canada and Mexico.
Drillsandcutters.com, I tried to order from them and was told they ship only to USA adresses,
Buying tools from the USA is challenge when you live abroad.

Rolf,
As has been stated earlier, the drill bits are 6" aircraft drill bits.  I normally get mine from Enco but have bought them from MSC when Enco was out.  The other sources mentioned will work as well.
Now the important question, do you know what caused the drill to break?  Not knowing any circumstances my suspicion is that the chips did not get cleared out and the drill bound up.  Maybe you experienced something different.  Clearing chips, even wood, is extremely important.  The actual drill size bore in the guide is about 3/4" to 7/8" long.  You need to clear chips every 1/8" or so.
The other thing I do is I layout and drill the stock with the barrel removed.  Once I have the pin hole through the stock, I clamp the barrel back into the stock and then using a standard jobber length drill I mark (dimple) the tennon.  I then remove the barrel, center punch the tennon and complete drilling the hole.  The reason I do this is that I have learned that the steel chips from the tennon can work to auger out the 1/16" hole in the wood when clearing chips.
I hope this information helps.  If you need any assistance please PM me and I will be more than happy to assist you.  If you are missing the instructions I enclose with the drill fixture I can email you a copy of them as well.
David

I drilled through the stock without the barrel as you described. Then I put the barrel back in and tried to drill through the steel tenon. That's when it broke. Did not have a short 1/16" drill and was to much in a hurry to finish the job.

Best regards

Where could a fella buy one of those drill jigs? I'd like to have one. I'm constantly messing up those pin holes. This looks like that may solve that problem.

Hei Rolf:  Another good source for long drills is found at http://www.buydrillbits.com.  The type of bits that Dave Rase uses in this jig is called an aircraft drill.  This source is also a good source for all sorts of extra long drills.  Dave Rase probably has replacement for his jig.

Rolf:  Here is another idea for you.  Rather than try to track down long aircraft drills, contact Snyder on our list and purchase one of his drilling jigs.  With his you use a normal length drill and drill from one side and then the other.  The holes meet in the mortise you have cut.  In addition, Snyder will prepare a custom set for you for various drill sizes.  I suppose he would also create something metric for you if you don't want to use our English measure sizes.  The only drawback I have found for his jig is that I've had trouble keeping it centered when drilling rounded surfaces on a precarve.  Hope this helps.
