Hunting Horn For Smokinbuck
« on: March 09, 2014, 09:41:55 PM »
  He had a very large horn, 26”, and asked me what I thought I could do with it, my thought was a Hunting horn. When I was drilling it I managed to drill out the side, yes it happens to all of us every once in a Blue Moon.  Anyway, I had this horn and tried to make up for my bad day in the shop with it.
   It is about 16” around the outside curve, the bell is about 3”s. The mouthpiece is turned from horn and is a press fit. The bands is held with three pins.

That's got a great shape to it!

Bummer on the drilling mishap.

Very nice horn.  I like the shape as well as the color and scalloped bell.

Tim...I realy enjoy seeing these hunting horns. Could you give us noobs a bit of detail on how to make the mouth piece?  That is, what is the general internal dimension/shape intended to be?

I have a lathe, and I am not aftraid to use it!

Great recovery after the mistake.  That is an unusually handsome horn, by the way.

  First, thanks Kermit I wish I had had that link/contact years ago.

  Take a look at this link, it is a tutorial on making a Hunting horn, it shows one way;

  http://americanlongrifles.org/forum/index.php?topic=17399.msg162759#msg162759

 The fit of the tip is different than this one.
 I drilled a horn tip, put it on a Pen mandrel, turned the outside to a cylinder, put that in a four jaw chuck and drilled/turned with small tools the cup. Then back on the mandrel to turn the outside shape and shank down (15/32nds) so it fits the horn, it is a press fit.
 Here is a pic of this style.
