Cedar Ridge Forge Workshop with Instructors Joe Seabolt and Joe McGee

October 18 and 19, 2014 at the Log Cabin Shop, Lodi Ohio

Whether used for knife making, heat treating, or general blacksmithing, the heart of any top quality gas forge is a well designed and properly constructed burner.  In this class, students will build an atmospheric propane  burner based on Joe Seabolt and Joe McGee's improved design.  This efficient unit is simpler to build than many, requires no welding to build, no electricity to run, and is readily adaptable to a wide variety of forge types.  Students who participate in this class can expect to take home a fully functional burner.

As a part of the class, your instructors will demonstrate the step by step assembly of a gas forge, utilizing the Cedar Ridge Forge Burner and an inexpensive five gallon air tank.  While relatively small, this forge is well suited to knife making and general blacksmithing projects, and is capable of reaching high forge welding temperatures as well as achieving lower consistent soaking heats.

Time permitting, the instructors will assist students in the construction of their own forge tanks from their own materials.

In addition to the forge assembly demo, your instructors will be bringing along several working gas forges of different sizes, all of them built around the Cedar Ridge Forge Burner. Instructors will demonstrate forge operation, techniques and safety practices.

Class fee is $300 plus a $75 materials fee. For registration info, contact Liza Kindig at the Log Cabin Shop at either webmaster@logcabinshop.com   or  (330) 948-1082.  After registering for the class, students will be contacted by the instructors to answer any questions and discuss options for forge design based on student requirements.

Here are a few images of the type of forge that the instructors will assemble as a demo during the class -

Photos showing the forge fired and a ladle being heated to hammer out. Joe Seabolt has also used this forge to make forge welded hawk heads and for forging and hardening knife blades.

We had a class on making a very similar little forge out here a number of years ago. It was a great class,(thanks Rich) a great little forge, and I have used mine for small projects a bunch. This is a class well worth taking.
For those who have never taken a class with Ian, You're missing a great time. He is a great instructor, fun to be with, and you'll never regret the time spent learning this skill.
Wish I were closer and could be there myself.

Steve -  I really enjoyed teaching coming out to Washington to teach a couple classes for the Gunmaker's Guild, great group of guys and you all should be commended for all the hard work that you put into the event. I hope to get back out that way some day! Maybe we all ought to meet in the middle some time, that we all only go half broke.

Something I ought to clarify is that Joe Seabolt and Joe Mcgee will be teaching this gas forge workshop (I'm still living in the coal age). Many here will already be familiar with Joe Seabolt's work, if not just do a Google search of "Joe Seabolt Knives" and plenty of images will come up for you to look at. His work has been featured in Muzzleloader magazine, Muzzle Blasts, American Tradition etc.   I'm the proud owner of one of Joe's knives, have used it to unzip many a deer.
