One More Moravian
« on: March 22, 2014, 06:22:15 PM »
Hi folks. Here is a gun I am just finishing up. It has a 38 inch, C-wt, .54 cal, Colerain barrel. I used a Chambers Germanic lock. The piece of wood is pretty plain, but it came out with some nice color and figure here and there.

I built this thinking it might be a slightly later "early" gun where the brass patch box was just coming into more common use.

I am always open to critiques and am looking to learn from your comments.

Thanks!

I like it also.  The engraving and carving are nice features, but don't detract from the overall "simplicity" of the gun.  Nice job.

That looks really nice....I bet it was a fun rifle to work! The PB looks balanced (those nice easy ones!) good ageing, just needs a home over a stone hearth fireplace!

A completely credible rifle.  I have a .58 cal x 38" Rice barrel and a Chambers Germanic lock set aside for just such a project.  thanks for sharing your work.

I like it! Good job capturing the mass of those early rifles.  Really like the patchbox engraving and the tang carving.

I love the coloration and the engraving.  How about a view inside the patchbox.

Very nice! The running boar side plate tells the story where this shooter belongs.

Nice! I like everything except I'd have not squished the t-guard so close to the wrist. Color is great as is the architecture. Great gun.

There's very much to like on your Moravian gun. I also think the patch box engraving is very well done.

Hi KL,
Great solid gun.  As Taylor said, very credible for the period.  Congratulations.

Great rifle!! That's my kind of gun.  Always loved those early rifles.  I have a 38" barrel on my personal gun and just love to shoot it, and carry it while hunting.  I have a nice 36" swamped .50 cal that I'm going to put on an early gun for my grandson, and see if he will let me borrow it.

Thanks much, folks.

Mike, thanks for the tip on the guard. It does look pinched at the front end.

The finish is: Track of the Wolf's aqua fortis that they sell. I watered it down a little after testing it. I also used some LMF maple to get a redder tint on the stock.  The finish is a couple of coats of Permalyn sealer, and then Chambers oil for a top coat. I think I did 2 coats of the Chambers.

Here are some pics of the interior of the patch box.  The opening (curled) spring is made out of the spring stock that Muzzleloaders Builders supply sells. I heated it to a dull red to bend it and then tempered it. The main spring for the patch box is one of Track's large springs for a wooden patch box lid. I cut the end off of it and welded on the head of a real small carriage bolt for the knob on the spring.

Like it . Architecture is excellent. Carving is well done and I like your tang designs. The Griffin looks good standing alone behind the cheek piece, but would look vastly better incorporated into carving including the cheek piece and toe.

Bill, do you mean incorporated with some scroll work in those areas?  I think I see what you mean, but I'm not sure how to pull it off. Thanks.

True dat. The griffin needs anchored to the stock with a bit of carving. Still looks good though.

Wonderful overall package.  I especially like your restrained, but very well executed engraving and carving.
I'll admit that the trigger guard may look a little more traditional if it stood a little further from the stock, but I'm sure I'd prefer it as is for shooting.

Very nice!
