I love this gun. I especially like the griffin carving. And, thank you very much for thinking  of using the blanket for a backdrop. Using a wood pile, rock pile, old fence, or highly figured wooden table, makes picking out details almost impossible.

Nice, Ken!  Love the architecture, color, and metal finish.  The detail carving around the comb is a really nice touch.  You going to the show at Williamsburg?  Bringing this rifle?

Thanks again everyone. All the tips and comments mean a lot to me.

Ed, yup I'll be in Williamsburg and I'll have this and a couple of other new guns for sale. I'm also bringing that "Twigg" I made last summer. I've become so attached to that one as my hunting gun that it will have an NFS tag on it!  I'm looking forward to seeing you and all the other fine folks. Also hoping to pick up some supplies and ogle all the other guns that will be there.

I am late to  the party, but would like to add that I think you captured the spirit of the early guns.  I am sure that there were a lot more of less ornate ones than the high end guns.   I hope that it shoots well and that it gives you a lot of enjoyment.   Ron

Stock pattern?
« Reply #35 on: March 28, 2014, 02:32:03 PM »
What would a close pattern for this stock?
An early German trade gun?
I do like it....and may try my hand at making one....but I have sooo many irons in the fire, I would like to get Dave to profile me a stock out.....and from Fred's patterns, maybe that German trade gun would get me going in the right direction...?
Thank for showing her off....... ;)

Where did you get the pattern for the Gryphon?  I was a Missile Combat Crew Commander got the Ground Launched Cruise Missile Weapon System...the Gryphon was the symbol all of the Missile Wings shared...

BTW, I'd also be interested in what stock pattern you used as well as how you managed what looks to be "pierced" engraving on your patch box.  GREAT thinking on the spring and the lock for the lid.  Simple but elegant!

Hi Peter,

I am not sure where I got that griffon. I tend to search the internet and find stuff in weird places. I think it might have been part of a wood carving on ebay, but I'm not certain. I usually find a few images on google images that seem to fit what I am after, and then add and subtract until it looks right and fits the space well.  I do remember that the one I liked had a different kind of head on it and I changed it to that head that is more bird like.

This pattern was Clay Smith's "Christian Spring".  It is a little different from the Marshall pattern that I have done before, and I really love the feel of this gun's architecture.

I have only been able to see (up close) two original step toe guns, and both of them were smaller overall than I expected.
