Fowler Trigger guard. Where to Bend It?
« on: March 23, 2014, 04:10:33 PM »
Where should I bend the trigger guard so that the the tail follows the cast off in the stock?  Right at the start of the tail?  I think that's what I'm seeing in the photos I have but want to be sure before I start trying to bend one.

If you have the bottom curve of your stock all set, then you need to form the guard to it.

If your stock profile isn't done, then don't bend the guard yet.

For my vise, which I use as a press:
I make up a vee block out of maple, and put the bow, for example, across the vee. Then take a finger, also of maple, and press that in the middle of the guard bow that is resting on the points of the vee. As I tighten the vise, I can watch the bow bend, and have a lot of control WHERE I want to bend, and how much.

Sometimes you need to bend right where the grip rail meets the bow. That's where the above method works really well. You might have to make custom fingers or nests to get into tight areas, but that's easily done with scrap wood and a saw.

Thank you Acer. The good news is that I was able to bend the guard just as I wanted. The bad news is that I found a void in the casting about half way out on the tail that I need to repair before going any further. What looked like a slight ripple when I was cleaning the guard up turned out to be something more serious. Installing the guard is in hold until I can repair it. Oh well. 2 steps forward 1 step back...
