twisted stock?
« on: March 26, 2014, 06:13:43 AM »
I am building a York rifle from a Chambers component set. I have the barrel in the stock and all the furniture in place and everything works right. What I didn't notice is that my stock seems to have a twist. The stock is made with cast off and I am right handed. The toe end of the buttplate seems to be angled out away from me when shouldered. Don't know if this is making sense to anyone, but if there was a straight line through the center of the buttplate from top to bottom, it would not be perpendicular to the top barrel flat. Anyway, it doesn't really feel bad or anything. I am curious if anyone else has ever run into this with a pre-carved type stock. Not much else to do but go on and finish it out. I guess it will be experience at the least.

the question would be one of if its twisted or if it was built that way
IE was the stock was built with a  given degree of pitch  or what sometimes is referred to as camber .  In other words , the toe pitches out alittle .
I have known stock makers who  put pitch into all their stocks . In fact the gunsmith  I  worked with as a young boy  often  added pitch when making new stock for heavy  recoil center fires ..
Steve Zihn also  one time told me that he  at times  added pitch to the toe  for a given build of person
So IMO unless it’s a drastic pitch  of the toe , it should not effect anything really .

Brokenhand,

Give Jim Chambers a call and ask them about it.  He'll tell you if it was built with pitch in it or not.  Jim is a member of the ALR forum and will probably respond to your question if he sees it.  But in case he doesn't see it call him.  He and his business have a great reputation for customer support.

Toe-out is usually a good thing as far as fit especially for those with a muscular chest, breasts(women) or anyone with extra weight or mass in the chest area.

Some expensive guns were built that way intentionally in order to fit the owner. Some people have a tendency to tilt a gun to one side or another.  Pitch as it is called will correct that tendency. This is especially true in very expensive custom made shotguns.
It won't hurt anything and might make it shoot better.
Nobody is always correct, Not even me.

See how it fits you. I once owned an early Holmes English fowler that had a short LOP,  the cast looked weird and the toe turned out like you describe. It was the best fitting stock I have ever owned and just looking at it I would have never thought it would have fit me at all.

Pitch is the angle of the buttplate with reference to the top line of the bore looking at the stock from the side.  Pitch can change how you see the barrel and how the gun moves in recoil.  Best if it is close to 90 degrees.   Cast off is usually correct for a right handed shooter and should be just enough to bring your right eye in natural alignment with the sights and usually about 3/16" or less.  Toe out, which you are describing, if it is not severe, makes for a more comfortable fit of the butt into the shoulder pocket and is a preferred construction especially in really high end shotguns and rifles fitted to the owner.  How much toe out from the center line does this stock have?  a 1/4" or less should be beneficial.

Thank you all for your replies. I tried to call Jim Chambers, but he is out of town for a couple of weeks. I had not been shooting my muzzle loaders for a few years. An old friend moved back in state and we started talking and next thing I know, I have a new Chambers kit on order and we are on our way to the CLA show last Aug. My wife got me the rifle for our 20th ann. and the CLA show was like Disneyland for old men.
Back to the rifle, as near as I can tell it has about 3/8-1/2 in toe out. So Fred, yes, the comb has 1/4 in of cast and the toe has 5/8-3/4 in. I don't have the sights mounted yet. It is kind of hard to tell, but seems like I have to twist a little counter clockwise with my right hand to make the top barrel flat be level. It feels fine on my shoulder. I am 5ft 8 in / 160#. No big chest or muscles although I try to stay in shape somewhat.
