Two Piece Horn W/Bands/ Pic of Original Added
« on: March 26, 2014, 07:49:48 PM »
This is my take on a horn from the Kendall collection shown in the Galleries of the Sibley’s fine book
Building The Southern Banded Horn.
It is about 9 ˝” around the outside curve, made up of two horns. The Apple wood base is about 2”, it is held in place by four wooden pegs, there is an eye hook for the strap.
The three bands are held in place by three wooden pegs each. The pegs for the center band also hold the two pieces of horn together. The finish is AF and Brown shoe polish.

Very nice. I didn't even realize that horns were even built that way. Thank you, Mark

That's an interesting piece of work Tim. I like the finish.

Tim,
I can picture that horn with a nice little southern squirrel rifle and groundhog bag.  Your horn is out there, but still traditional enough that I really like it.  Good job!

Here is a pic of the original that I used as an example.

Tim,
How did you seal the two pieces of horn?  I know you stated that they were pinned but I am assuming that bees wax or hide glue would of been used to fill any gaps and make it air tight.

I started by bringing the body down to almost finished. Then rounded the tip out and fit it just like you would inlet a part. Blacken the inside of the tip and tap it in place and then remove the marks, you can be pretty aggressive while fitting. Once you get a good fit, angle is right, with twist if you want, finish the two pieces and fit the body band before you put it together. I used hide glue to seal it.
If you notice there are no pins on the original, the pins go through the tip only. I wasn't brave enough to go that route.

The only info I have is that it was found in Kentucky.

If you can fit a plug, you can fit a tip that way. You beat me to it Scott.
