Southern Mountain Rifle

I getting ready for a mountain rifle build. I have a Chambers Late Ketland, a 40 cal 15/16 X 42 Rice barrel  also a TOF precarve walnut stock on the way. This will mainly be used in offhand shooting and maybe a few squirrel rifle matches so I want to keep it just under 10 pounds. A very plain functional shooting rifle it may not get a butt plate just depends of the weight. I do want to keep the barrel as long as possible and think that I can get by with at least a 38 inch hopefully a 40 inch barrel.

This is not my first build and have over the years built several rifles a couple of Hawkens a couple of long rifles and a couple of underhammer target rifles. I'm not interested in picking a particular builder and copying every last minute detail, not that talented anyway but want a rifle that looks good and has the proper lines and feel.

The first big question in my mind is just what shape would the cross section of the fore stock look like were there any particular tendencies that the Southern rifle builders followed.

Thanks, Richard

i have only 3 SMR builds, but a nice little round forstaock looked best to me...they are THIN in the buttstock area....neither near 10#....in fact until someone shoulders them, they think they are 'childs' rifles.
small calibers, small barrels, iron funiture, cresent buttplates, no patchboxes...thinthinthin.....
'V' shape could work also, I just liked the oval/roundie type...still only 1/8" thicker than the barrel, and the wrist barrel+1/4" thick....then all tapers back to BP...
and...spend a little time, and put that 'lollipop tang' on it.....really dresses it up~
 ;D
just have a 'cuss jar' ready......youll need it! ;)

Not quite your subject answer but my 1" - 42" 40 cal rifle comes in around 12# with a solid patent breech, walnut stock and steel trim.

Unless swamped, I would concider looking at the 7/8'' straight barrel in the .40 .
The 15/16th barrel would be a tank IMHO
