What is the proper shape for the head of the barrel keys on an early full stock Hawken?  Oval or rectangular?

I have seen both oval and rectangular on original rifles, so the "proper shape" is what you desire.

I have pics of three full-stock J&S rifles (that have enough detail to see the keys clearly) and they have very small oval headed keys - the oval barely looks larger than the opposite side.

That's all I can contribute to the question. Have never personally seen a square key.

The Medina rifle has square headed keys as do a at least a couple of other in Jim Gordon's book....
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

I'll go with small oval.  Retired USAF or RCAF?
Me, retired USAF
