    I been wanting to build a southern iron mounted gun. But with my renewed interest in turkey hunting, I would like to make it a shotgun in a smooth rifle. So, has anybody ever seen a southern .mt. rifle with an Q/R barrel.??      AL

The typical late flint, narrow buttstock, deeply curved buttplate style of rifle we think of when we hear Southern Mountain rifle might not be fun to shoot when pushing an ounce or more of shot.

This is just my opinion and I am stating it for what its worth. I don't think the southern mountain rifle as we think of it today came about until well after the time frame of O/R barrels. If I wanted to build a southern iron mounted gun with O/R smooth bore barrel I would think about something along the lines of the early smooth bores that Don Bruton used to make. They were very well done and certainly early southern guns. Don is firing one of these guns in this video

    Thanks Dennis for jumping in here, I knew you would know. I have got to many guns in my mind that I want to build and I was trying to narrow it down some...lol.    AL

 Why not build a 18th Century Carolina Trade Gun. Many were found with rear sights.
 Clay Smith offers them in kits to finished.
 Mike Brooks offers them from in the white to Finished.
 Jack Brooks builds them and occasionally offers classes.

I would go on with this project. I bet there is a southern mountain rifle somewhere, that was set up smooth bore. The heavy barrel will check the recoil, somewhere between 20 ga. and 410 cal. No. 4 shot wood be good. Finding over powder wads,cushion wads and over shot disc is another thing. Have fun and build the rifle. You might win the turkey shoot.
