Shot/ball pouches
« on: April 30, 2014, 06:42:03 PM »
These were inspired by Karl Z Smith's book "Gettin' The Lead Out". I used a mix of materials seen in the book with the exception of the river cane spout.  All the turned antler spouts were made by Orville Mumma.

thanks for looking

Very well done Eric, they look right. Did you use the cloth pin type stoppers?

Thanks Tim.  5 of the spouts are turned antler with clothespin stoppers which were made by Orville Mumma, I only aged them slightly.  I made the other 2 homely looking spouts, one from horn and another from cane and they just have whittled wood stoppers, no clothespins.

That's a wide range of shot pouches.

When you mention "clothes pin" stoppers, do you mean something like was done with wood tompions?

thank you.  They were made by Orville Mumma.  I believe a member here named Mitch Yates also makes these.  I will pm you both of their contact info.

Gus,
that's more or less what the stoppers look like, except they're made to fit each individual spout.

These look really good Eric. I've seen some pictures of your shot pouch's on fb. Looks like you're branching out. Now to get yourself a lathe. Lord only knows where that would lead!! ;)

thanks again.  I picked up the components of a taken apart lathe on the cheap when a neighbor had a garage sale...haven't quite figured out how to assemble them yet.

Eric,  Thanks for the explanation.

Oh, have you tried looking for a manual for the lathe you got from a neighbor?  Many old manuals are available on line.  Also, you might check around a machine shop or two to see if they know any retired machinists who could help you put it together.  You may even find someone who worked on that type lathe before.
