Hello all. Beginner here. I have been visiting this awesome website very regularly. I am amazed at the talent that is exhibited by the members. True works of art. I am a novice at most. I thought to post some powder horns I have done in the last few years for myself and also given to a couple of friends as gifts. I realize some might not be period correct, however, I choose the particular design because it either had a special meaning to me, or it was a friend's request.
Thank you and please feel free to critique. After all, that is how I learn.

I really like the second one with the fish and the carving on the plug of the 4th one.

I love the octopus! Take a look again folks. The tentacles are by the swordfish. Wonderfully inventive. :-). Best wishes, Marc

Thank you. I got the inspiration from the movie, Pirates of the Caribbean. I grew up in a island in Greece and used to catch octopus and fish while growing up. I gave this horn to my brother as a gift.

Really like all the work you put into the buffalo horn. I don't believe I have ever seen one with as much decoration as you have put on it. Great work on all the horns. You have a lot of talent. Thanks for sharing them.

Very nice horns. I especially like the buffalo horn. I have only worked on two and they were both a lot more involved than cow horns. Your buffalo horn shows a lot of very fine work. JZ

Hello Bill and welcome to the ALR site. There's lots of talent here and everyone is so willing to help out. Some of these guys amaze me with the things they come up with. Impressive. You have a real grasp of proper line and good architecture, which is more important than engraving, which you also have a really good grasp of.

Thank you all for your kind words. I have been thinking of trying my hands on a flat horn. I have a horn that does not have a curve, however I do not have a book press. Would a vise work, if I placed the horn in between two wood boards, (and an insert inside the horn, for support, of course)? I am not sure, if I would get an even pressure throughout the whole body of the horn. I have seen some homemade presses made out of plywood sheets. How do those work, or should I wait until I find a proper press?

Yes it will work I have made up to 14" flat horn just using a vice and boards
