« on: June 13, 2014, 12:21:49 AM »
I was admiring Taylor s sight and would like one on my English Sporting rifle
Only problem it has a short tang with no room to mount a base
Any idea s would be appreciated
    Thanks   Sydney

Sydney, a profile view of the rifle would be great, and some angle shots of the wrist would really help.

I have seen sight bases inlet right into the wood. An example is the long range M/L rifles with a ladder sight at the heel of the buttstock.

Sydney:  I have an antique Jaeger that has an 'after market' steel receptacle inlet right through the tang carving behind the tang.  It is a square tube, obviously to receive a square staff for the diopter sight.  Need that 1/4' x 80 tap and die?  (Sydney lives a couple miles from me.)  One revolution of the sight raises or lowers the sight .0125".

I have seen Jaeger rifles with a inlet bushing that will take a tang sight. Taylor beat me to it.

Sydney, the obvious answer is to have Taylor install it for you.

Sydney does not need me to do any work for him, though I would be pleased to do so.  He is a gifted gunmaker in his own right.  He rust blued the new barrel on my 1874 Sharps and CCH'd the lock on my Jaeger, many years ago. There are no flies on his watermellon.

That looks a lot like a "Liberace" gun.
Does it have a pink gun case?
Seriously there is a lot of beautiful work on that particular gun, I would be very hesitant to shoot it.
I'd hang it on the wall beside the picture of my mother-in-law. ;D

The european diopter sights I have seen often have a square socket perpendicular to the wrist. The sight itself is made so the disc is vertical, with integral windage and elevation adjustments.

Taylor's has an arrangement with the round threaded socket in the tang perpendicular to the bore. The elevation is by screwing the whole sight lower or higher.

I just felt like blabbing today.  ;D

Sydney, can you make another plate, to replace the thumb piece, a plate with a threaded tube for mounting the diopter?

...or use that plate/thumbpiece as the base for the tube? Is it sturdy enough?

Happens that a customer was in need of a peep sight for a mid 19th century percussion rifle with a conventional tang on the barrel.  The sight below is a sort of composite of what I have seen on original rifles.  The screw at the base locks the staff while the small screw on the sight frame locks the dovetail.  Staff is threaded 1/4-60.
The base is a basically a blank needing contouring and shaping except for the area around the staff entry.  The black screw on the under side comes up from the bottom of the wrist under the trigger plate to secure the base on that axis.

The English rifle with the short tang could use this same sort of base but it would need to be long enough to accommodate the mounting screws for a long range sight.  To cover the escutcheon however may be problematical due to its width.

Shooting a jaeger like that, one should not be attired in dashboards!
