Don...don't know...you're the barrel maker.  What started as conjecture has become outright terror...I may look bad in the morning but...

In Major Ned Robert's book on the Percussion Rifle... to increase accuracy... there is a section on tapering the bore utilizing lapping to make a minute (not truly remove rifling) reduction in the rifling to aid in loading and bullet grip on the rifling to the rear of the muzzle...

not quite the same as removing the rifling to aid cleaning.
