Attic find mystery flintlock
« on: July 01, 2014, 06:46:55 AM »
Hello-
This musket came out of an attic in the American south and has me stumped. Perhaps French? I have never seen a lockplate marked with numbers in this manner, has anyone else?
Thanks!
Nick

it looks a little crude for a French musket. I might be more inclined to think its country of origin could be Spain. The lock has no bridle on the pan, and the frizzen spring is either a field replacement, or was initially made quite crudely. The lock styling does not resemble most French examples. It could also be an American musket assembled from surplus, or recycled parts.

I think you're right about it being a "bitsa" gun.
