Sweat.......
« on: July 16, 2014, 09:42:27 PM »
Hey all,

how worried should I be about a sweat stain? I was leaning over the stock doing a little scraping and realized a couple drops from my arm had fallen. Now there are two nice grey blotches. Easily seen against the unfinished wood but will they show up in the final finish?

I have to assume the early gunsmiths used to sweat all over theirs in hot shops with fireplaces and forges and it did not ruin anything. I hope I didnt......

thanks!

Sweat, blood, dirt, dents; it all adds character. ;)

This time of year it's hard to avoid,my little AC unit in the shop barely makes a dent.If you're concerned wash the stock down with Cleanwood(a solvent mixture available at paint and hardware suppliers) before you stain.I make a habit of doing it before I stain just to eliminate any surprises.

I am finishing up a gun right now that got bluish grey spots every where a drop of sweat landed on it. Not the normal dirty looking spots, but deep colored blotches.

The stock had real nice figure but didn't "pop" at all from the aqua fortis. I had experimented on a scrap from the blank and was worried that this might happen from what I saw on the scrap. I tried the aqua on a scrap from another blank and it "popped" just fine, so I know it isn't my aqua fortis.  I ended up doing some staining on it to try to show the figure, but it is a pretty "dead" piece of wood as far as that goes. Nice hard piece with good figure in the raw, but it just wouldn't show much figure. I figure it must have some sort of minerals in it that reacted with my sweat.

So, I hope your piece will finish up nicely, but mine sure didn't!

AND tomtom tracks...he has to "help" me by walking on the gun as it's in the vises... ::)

By the time you put water to raise the fuzz a few times, then stain it some, sealers etc.....you'll never see spots.......it'll be fine.

Just think, 200 years from now collectors will have the gunsmith's DNA along with his signature on the barrel!   ::)
