Half Stock Fowler...
« on: July 20, 2014, 09:44:17 PM »
This is one of Wayne Dunlap's component sets I've had sitting around the shop for a few years and just recently completed.  I did the pattern for Wayne that's used for this fowler, which is taken from an original he owns.

The lock is a Chambers.  I used a different trigger guard than the one that comes with the set, only because Wayne didn't have one in steel when I got around to building this one.  (I swapped out the brass furniture for steel)  The butt piece is molded from the original, as is the entry pipe.  This particular fowler is a 10ga.  All the steel was finished armory bright by sanding to 220 with emery cloth, then burnished with a maroon scotch bright pad.  The stock is English walnut, finished with Tried & True.  The wire inlay is of my design, as is most of the engraving.  The nose cap on the stock is black cow horn, and the ram rod is ebony wood.

Questions, suggestions, etc., are more than welcome.

Nice work Ed,
it looks all very correct. Beautiful engraving, wire work and carving. How much does the piece weigh?  When are you taking it out to the range?

Excellent work Ed. Your silver wire inlay looks very good in the walnut ;D

I particularly like the wirework where there might have been a sideplate. Nice touch.

Hi Ed,
A very nice effort, and great results!  As others have mentioned the silver wire work is quite nice, not over done and very classy.  I might have to try one of those, thanks for the inspiration...sure beats shuffling paper....Ron

Absolutely magnificent, Ed. I noted that suggestions are acceptable, so I would like to suggest that you send it to me. I promise to take good care of it and will use it to terrorize pheasant and partridge at every opportunity. I'll return it to you in a few years or so.

Beautiful work Ed, I love it!  Is the barrel rib tapered/flared to match the barrel, and is it soldered on?  I particularly like the large volute on the lock side of the buttstock.  See you in a few days!

Over the top, Ed!  Your wire inlay and engraving are superb, you just keep improving every gun you build.  As usual the carving is top self as well.  Great looking fowler.  I am proud just to know you after seeing the pics of this gun!  ;D

Thanks very much, everyone!...

I don't know what the fowler weighs, although it is rather light.

Eric, the under rib is a hollow rib that I soldered onto the barrel.

Don (& others), I'll have it at Dixon's.  It'll either be up on the hill or with Wayne Dunlap.

Sorry for the not so great photos, and thanks again.

Up to your usual standard of excellence Ed. I am a sucker for wire work in lieu of a sideplate.

Wish I was going to be at Dixon's to see the fowler in person, instead I get to sit through a week of a personal mastery executive workshop.  Oh boy!  Enough complaining... The ebony ramrod and cow horn nose cap add great contrast to the English walnut stock and the satin metal finish.  Top shelf Ed, top shelf.

What a wonderful fowler, it looks like it would swing well. The wire design is great, the flowers remind me of a Henry Deringer Jr. rifle I once saw.

Thanks again......

Dave, we'll miss you at Dixon's, really enjoyed the class with you at Bowling Green.

Tim, the ebony came from Dunlap.  Started as a 1/2" square....

Tom, you fishing for a plug, lol?  Rasps to get it half way circular, then your handy-dandy ram rod scraping tool!
