White lightnin installation
« on: August 09, 2014, 03:57:19 AM »
Okay, I'm working on my second build and installing a white lightnin touchhole liner from Jim Chambers (not the TOW version). So far I've drilled and tap the hole and slightly countersunk for the shoulder using an 82 degree countersink as indicated on the directions from Jim Chambers. My question is...did I countersink it enough or does it need more?

Here are some pics:

As always, thanks!

You maybe able to get another .005 or so but it will work where its at... IMHO...
Just a side note... After cutting it off.. Gently peen around the outer edge with a flat punch to insure a perfect match between the liner and barrel after you draw file it smooth....

Dave

I wouldn't go any deeper. I like the peening suggestion.

Agreed - you're in as far as you need to go.  Gently peen the lip after cutting the lug off and then file smooth.

Another .030 I would say and it should seat properly.

Do you get the countersink from Chambers also? And can one be installed without too much trouble without taking out the breech plug?......B Staley

Marc, on the inside the liner has not made it past the barrel, so no need to file anything protruding in the barrel.

B, I bought the countersink from TOW a long time ago. I removed the breech plug to measure exactly where to start drilling and to also ensure the liner is smooth against the barrel rifling etc. I honestly don't see how you'd install one from scratch without pulling the plug.

To be on the safe side, I always go deeper w/ the ctsk.....All that can happen is that the TH land is somewhat  longer, but if the ctsk is too shallow, the TH land could be a "feathered edge" and readily blowout.  Buy all my White Lightnings from Chambers and after using the 5/16 W for all my builds,  switched to the !/4" and  ended up w/ a "feathered edge" TH w/ the ctsk depth I normally use. So the TH land is a little longer w/ a deeper ctsk.....don't notice any difference when firing......Fred

If you install the liner deeper, you will have a longer touchhole, ie, the wall thickness between outside barrel surface to the cone will be longer. Then you increase the 'fuse effect', undermining the efficiency of the vent.

W/in the limits of correctly installing a White Lightning, don't see where a slightly longer TH land makes any difference whatsoever.....if there is any "fuse effect" I haven't noticed any. Would a drilled hole which was used for centuries  produce a "fuse effect"?......Fred

Why does the hole in mine look so much smaller than yours? Did you open yours up? Mine isn't much larger than the tip of a needle

I haven't opened mine up at all. Keep in mind I installed a 1/4 liner, maybe the proportion makes it look bigger? I just measured it and it's not even 1/16, just slightly smaller.

Stuart, mine is a 1/4" as well. I tried measuring mine and couldn't with my calipers. As best as I could eyeball it it was about .020", needless to say I just opened it up to 1/16" after a quick search revealed to me that TOW "white lightening" vent liners tend to be quite small.

Someone can correct me if needed... The white Lightning comes with a .055 dia. hole...

That seems about right. I'll probably open mine up to 1/16 after it's all said and done.

I have had problems with fouling related misfires in very humid environments when I didn't open the touch hole up to 1/16".     I always drill the touch hole out to 1/16".

If you end up with an .o2" hole, you might have installed the liner a little deeper? The flash hole on the liners is not drilled very far into the liner body. Or burrs are making the hole appear small?

I re-measured mine just to see the exact dimensions and it's .05, so I will be opening her up a bit to get around the .0625 mark.

Also, with this being my first time putting one of these guys in, I erred on the side of caution by installing it just a smidge over 1/16 in front of the breech face. That way if I screwed it up, I could easily go up to a larger liner (I read this on the forum somewhere). Anyway, does anyone see this negatively effecting the ignition timing or anything? Just curious.

I hope this is not too far off subject, but does anyone use a hand drill when putting in these liners?  Or are they all done on drill presses?
