Tennessee Tang
« on: August 22, 2014, 06:31:19 PM »
I have a Tennessee style rifle that I am building with an extend tang,  I have the profile for it that that I want but i am not sure if I should make it thinner or leave it as is.  The tang is 3/8 at the widest point then steps down to 3/16.

Does it look good against the stock? Do the lines flow?  I don't think there are any hard and fast rules to that measurement.  Just go by what your eye tells you.

I think of TN tangs as "full tangs".  All those others are half-tangs.  :P

Shape it how you like, the great thing about TN's is that there's no hard-fast standard unless you are making a direct copy.

Thanks guys for your input, I think that im going to leave it as it look good on the stock.  This is only my second gun and im trying to get the architecture to be an improvement over my last attempt.

IMHO, I like round ended long Mtn tangs......not a square :-\

Have fun inletting her....and what will help is to bevel the sides ever so slightly......then press fit her into your stock SLOWLY and carefully, old brass sight drift used in tapping her down.....

Yeah, no I never thought that you'd leave it square.  Maybe i misreaded.

I made my first one from flat stock, too thin and the "round" part is really wonky.  Gotta make mistakes to learn.

The thin part seems way too wide to me.   Generally,  that part is about 1/8" wide and more like 1/4" deep.   They are forged out so that there is still lots of metal in the thin part to keep the tang in place.    It is like a little I beam.   You can't make it correctly from a stock breech plug without forging.
