Well I wear my bag on my left side (I am right handed) but I carry my horn on my right side. Just seems natural to me from the first time I used them. Its natural for me to pull from the bag with my left hand and I hold my measure in my left hand and pour from the horn with my right.

One of these days I am going to try a pouch with attached horn but I am not sure it will seem right for me, not sure which side I would prefer carrying them on. Probably would have to be the right side since I don't think I could pour from the horn with my left hand (comfortably).

I'm right handed and wear my bag and horn on my left side.  I pour from the horn with my left hand.  I tend to carry the rifle in my right hand and on my right side.  I don't like it bumping into my powder horn.

I'm left handed and put my bag on the left.  Horn on the right.  Tried it both ways, but this is the most comfortable and requires less measure juggling, etc.  I'm not a fan of bag attached horns.  Seems like you have to lift the bag to pour the powder.  I do a four way braid with round leather thong for a strap.  Makes a skinny strap that easily slides over the shoulder.  Probably not HC, but who is being graded on it.  I also have a plywood ball starter.  Makes a nice flat surface to whack.

Wearing both bag and horn on the right (I'm right handed)  seems to work for me.  I have to pour from the horn with my right and hold the measure with my left to keep from spilling.  I have three bags with two having attached horns so there's no choice, there.  The third bag has a separate horn.  This makes it possible to experiment with the afore mentioned bag on the left and horn on the right.  This aught to work fine as well.

When I'm hunting- horn on the left , bag on the right I carry my rifle on the right. I don't like the bumping and noise if carry the horn on the right.
For a woods walk or informal "from the pouch" shoots I carry it all on the right.

Being both a bag maker and a horner....

I carry a bag on either side - depending on Snap Sack, haversack , bedroll.

Horn always left....opposite the frizzen.  I am right handed and eye dominant.  So the horn is opposite carry to the touch hole.

I shoot my flintlock right handed, but carry my bag and horn on my left. The only thing that is awkward about that, is priming the pan. I also think it is safer to have my powderhorn on the opposite side from my rifle, when shooting. Less chance of a stray spark.

I shoot right handed ,carry bag on either side just for the fun of it ,horn stays on the left because of safety, nosparks in horn as of yet .My measure ,brush ,patchs and pick is tied to a thong which is tied to the strap so I never have to get in the bag except for the r.balls which are in a small pocket just inside under the flap or in my britches pocket.I use original horns witch are more suited for left hand carry. This method has worked well for me but I can wear them either way with no problem.Curt

Though lots of shooters do otherwise with no problems, for me "not" carrying the powder horn directly under the falling sparks from a flint lock seems like a good idea...for a cap lock, maybe its not such a big deal...

TC If you look in the CLA magazine American Tradition Jan 2012 Pg 28 there is a drawing by David Wright that points out my reason for wearin my pouch the way I do .and I squirrel hunt a lot . Its NOT my intention to be negative to David in any way or degrade his picture (,I like his work a lot) .ITS THE SAFTEY issue that im pointing out and nothing else. But I think we should do what suits our selves not others . Curt    PS if someone wants to post the pic please do so.

Yes, I agree with you for sure about the thoughts on safety Curt...the last thing I need to do is forget to plug the horn after loading and have a few sparks fall in...

Since the early 1970's I have carried my bag on my right side and horn also.  I shoot right handed.
My horn is on a seprate strap from the bag.  I find this useful if I want to use a different bag for a different caliber.
All my horns are for right side carry with the spout turned into the body so that it will not catch on brush and vines.

If no one can reproduce this drawing, could someone describe what it depicts in words?  I don't have access to that publication and am trying to learn how to use a bag and horn...as soon as i finish my horn.

Virginiarifleman; Good morning Sir; Very good question, great answers. I'm of the two (2) strap group. Left side powder horn, right side bag. I'm a right handed flint shooter. Have a great holiday week end. AJ.

Upon going through My Madison Grant book of the Kentucky Hunting Pouch. 95% of the pictures taken of original hunting pouches show the powder horn attached to the strap and of a right hand carry. many of the flint period. even a painting of Daniel Morgan sitting with Flintlock in hand and Bag & Horn on his Right hip.
