Embossed Bag
« on: August 21, 2014, 02:23:21 PM »
This is a recently finished raised-embossed bag, gusset, two interior pockets, handmade steel buckle. I made this for table display at the CLA but debating on making it my pouch for hunting this season.

Good morning James; Sir, Very nice, great looking bag, well executed workmanship. I believe it is a keeper and a great display item for shows. Thanks for sharing. AJ.

Great looking bag!  Nicely executed.  I'd have a tough time parting with it for sure.

That's a Beauty!
Rightful liberty is unobstructed action according to our will within limits drawn around us by the equal rights of others. I do not add 'within the limits of the law' because law is often but the tyrant's will, and always so when it violates the rights of the individual.

Too nice to merely display, too nice to keep and use. I can help, send it my way and I'll do both. hehe

Excellent work sir!

James -

James VERY nicely done especially with this type reverse embossed work....I did a bunch mucho years ago when doing medieval work. One of the finest pieces I've ever seen was an unfinished sword sheath for a cinqueda that was commissioned by Cesare Borgia. Other fine work is some of the Irish work, both leather and rawhide, This  stuff is included in some of the books by John W Waterer, co-founder of The Museum of Leathercraft - if you have not seen his books check them out - a lot are expensive due to rarity, but I've found most via Interlibrary loan and then scanned or copied what I wanted to save

I'm curious is the back of the embossed pattern filled at all to help retain the shape? Most of the original reverse embossing I've seen has some kind of filler and the type of filler depends on the item - for pouches without a solid backing (i.e. sword sheaths and wall deco) the filler is usually leather scrapings plus a bit softer version of hide glue or cutler's resin or a mix with beeswax...

Chuck Burrows,
Thank you for the compliment. You always surprise me not just with your creations but with your ability to recall all your years of experience and study. I am having trouble with that knocking hard on the half century mark. I have seen one of the references you mention and I thank you for them. I am sure some others watching this post will also be much appreciative of the references for their study as well.

You are dead on the money in that I use a filler of leather shavings made from the the ground up leather "strings" saved from edging harness and strapping. A mortar is created by adding hide glue. I find this works best unless the design is closer to the edges. In that case, a softer mix is best. It is then covered with the leather backing.

OK, I've been off the board a few days, so my comments are late.  I like this bag a lot.  The overall shape is very attractive and the embossed design is a great detail.

I would be very interested in and appreciative of a tutorial on how to do this sort of work.

Very nice.

Larry here is a basic how-to
http://blog.leathercraftlibrary.com/2011/08/24/leather-repousse-technique-with-charlie-davenport/

It is often called leather repousse and there are also some Youtube videos on the technique

I've used a couple of methods as well: one take some soft wood and carve out the pattern in reverse. The other is take a block of lead and pound in the pattern..these work well for when wanting to repeat the pattern on various projects

and here's links to more info - https://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rlz=1T4GGNI_enUS476US476&q=repousse+embossing+on+leather

Good links  Chuck. Lots of helpful information and I have now bookmarked them.
I had to hook up my old computer to find out the source of my coming to know anything at all about embossing which is very little.
This is a 1905 book from England that was translated from French. I found it online as well but it was on my old phone. I think it was project Guttenberg.
