i gave mr zihn permission to do whatever he wants. all i asked was for it to be in iron and make her fit me.
and the best quality parts money can buy.
he said he has a fifty ? year old blank of walnut.. should be good and dry by now !
ive been looking around Missouri and asking questions.
many of the early settlers here in the ozarks used flintlocks.. my dad reminders me that when he was a child in the 30s his dad used an old flintlock from his daddy..
my dads brother still has it. pop seems to remember it was a .43 caliber .
he said it would really crack ! no ideal who made it. i need to go see it.
hopes my cousin still has it.

not sure on lock and barrel .. i just told mr zihn to buy/build the best that money can buy.
he said we will go with a 44" swamped barrel.
walnut stock. iron furniture .. no patchbox..

Tow, tow worm, ball puller, range rod (you'll want to match thread diameter/pitch to the packin' stick that comes with the gun (inquire)).

If you're going to buy a case of powder, check to see that powderinc isn't the best option.  

390's and 395's, two or three different patching materials, all on thicker side of "normal"

Flint options are generally knapped English or French, sawn German or otherwise.  Most of "us" go for knapped.  I only have Rich Pierce's Missouri rocks (not currently in production last i heard) and English.  They're getting more expensive every week or two...stock up.  Flints are available many sources, but check with your gunmaker to get right size for the lock.

Turnscrew/multi-tool type stuff.  You never operate a rocker without a screwdriver (or a quarter if you open up the cockscrew slot properly) and a pick and a pan brush is real handy.

Yes, horns and bags easier to buy than make.  Plenty are sold right here in our classifieds.  You might have to learn up about period/gun styling so you don't get all mismatched.

Sounds like it's going to be a fun rifle!  I spent my mad money on a new "used" pickup 'cause the little lady would say (if I built another flintlock) you don't need another gun. So,,, instead of saying that - she said - "oh, I like that (pickup). I can drive that to work and save miles on my (her) car...  She never said she'd shoot my new rifles I've built... Go figure...

Perfect caliber!!!! I prefer the 45 caliber but that's only cause I had good luck with mine. A swamped barrel 40 is going to handle better than rapier and almost as slender.

it's old-skool here.  There is no hosting at this site, you must upload your photos to a third party server that does host, like any of the photo hosting sites or even FB, or even another message board.  THEN grab that link and poke it into your post, be sure to include image tags.  .  Easiest way to do that is to highlight the link text then select the "photo" icon above, it will add the tags.   I use imgur.com.

  The old saw: "If God wanted us to shoot caplocks, he would have strewn caps all around, instead of rocks."  You're in for some great shooting fun.  The hard part is the wait.  You can acquire all the cool stuff to go with it over the time you wait for the gun.  Shop around, and you can find really beautiful accoutrements and even period clothing.  I've wanted a flintlock since I was a kid, and I finally have a beautiful one, and I'm having a wonderful time shooting it and playing dress-up with my black powder club.  This forum has some really experienced shooters with good advice on all the minutiae like ball size, patch material, lubes, powder and flints etc etc.  I do most of my shooting at a public range in Vancouver, WA, and the guys with their plastic fantastic "zip guns" really take notice when that white smoke roars out of what they think is an antique.  You'll have a merry, merry "Christmas" when that gun arrives.  Good luck!

Once you shoot it you'll never go back to caps. You're  going to wish you did it much earlier.

I agree and I think the 40 is the 7mm of muzzle loading rifles.  Flat shootin buggers. But a swamped barreled 40!!! Peabody is going to be doing back flips when he opens that box!!
