30 cal. barrel
« on: September 30, 2014, 11:28:32 PM »
who makes a 30 or even a 38 caliber barrel ? After this last go with the surgeon I don't have the strength
to do my big guns. At least the tumor was benign. I'd like to try to do a different / odd caliber rifle.
If I can even do that.

Charles Burton has a good reputation.  He has about any caliber one could want listed on his web site. http://fcibarrels.tripod.com/rifle-barrels.html   There are others, but I replaced my computer and lost most of my web sites.  If only I could replace my mind.

I have an FCI in 30 and a piece of Walnut... to be married soon.

Charlie does some neato calibers.  38 is one.  I think i "need" a 47 as well.    :P

Of course you do Wade.  Every body needs a .47 caliber rifle.

Got me a .30 caliber ordered from Mr. Burton.  I have time to heal and get parts now.

Thank you for the tips.

.30 caliber is a pretty small RB, I have a tough time with a .395 myself.

Hey everybuddy knows Prime Number Calibers (PNC) are more accurate and powerful and won't talk about you behind your back.   :P

.30cal. isn't bad to handle if you use a loading block.  I have two loading blocks for a total of about 15 rounds for shooting out of the bag.  I turned down a 5/16" plastic rod to avoid using the rifle's skinny ramrod.  Wouldn't take much to break a .25" rod.  You'll like shooting a .30.  Almost zero recoil!!

I think ramrods are a bigger issue with tiny calibers than is the handling of small balls. Loading blocks and the use of the dreaded ball starter can pretty much take care of that. The itty-bitty wood rod on my .25 has never been used to push a #4 shot down the bore. I have a range rod and made a brass rod that I find adds more muzzle weight than I like. I'm thinking a tubular brass rod is the next thing to try.

Wade, I'd be sure the bottom flat of a prime number caliber barrel had a hidden hex sign or two engraved on it! No point in taking risks with the universe's Sense of Humor.

It's going to be a while on getting the barrel. When I get it and working on it I surely will.
The doc said it will take four months to heal up. A lot of muscle and lymph nodes removed.
So I wait not to patiently.

The Burton website indicates a .003 taper in the bore.  In your experience, is this a choke taper?  How are these barrels in the accuracy department?

When I ordered the barrel Charles told me that the taper was to ease the loading with a wood rammer.
He also said the 30s are great shooters.  Maybe by next bushy tail season.

So, is this a form of mild coning at the muzzle?

Based on my experience with Bill Large in past years,I would say that Burton barrel will shoot with about any round ball barrel if the muzzle is properly finished.

Daniel, bob, and others...........here's the 54 cal 46-1/2" Burton barrel on a longrifle I made for a LEO over in SC~ he shot it with starting loads and this is the 50yd 3 shot results:

gives RB groups @ 100yrds under 2 inches.......... ;D...VERY happy camper!!!!

you'll wait6-8 months for his barrels, BUT....worth the wait...here's the latest muzzle end on a 50cal, see how the crowning works?

so, save up your muscles, hunt for a nice piece of wood.........and put it all together for a 100% satisfied result!

i have it on good authority, IF you mail out a box of homemade cookies to Charles, he'll do a extra special job......he's a little runt and needs some food to grow some...........ahahahahahahahaaaa

This is just what I've been looking for. I have a Henry Leman 38 cal. long rifle that's been in the family for years. I want to make a copy of it. I will be putting in an order soon. Thanks
