Is it real?
« on: December 12, 2017, 04:41:57 PM »
Found this on an online auction site, fleabay. Could it be a Jamestown NC Rifle that has had a hard life? Looks in decent shape except the butt had been shortened.
I don't think the lock is orginial. What say you?

Rare outside action flintlock. Extremely rare and valuable.  ;)

The trigger guard doesn't look Jamestown to me.

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

Left hand shotgun lock, barrel doesn't appear to belong with the stock, best thing about it is the trigger guard. It is southwest Virginia, probably Shaeffer or one of his neighbors.

Could it be Western Virginia? The rest of the pictures. Is the comb and cheek piece like Jamestown? Thanks!

The guard is either Shaeffer or Honaker, Wytheville, VA area. Nothing about it looks even remotely like a Jamestown.

I would lean more toward Honaker 1st quarter 19th century over it being shaffer. Every Shaffer I have seen always has a front spur that's either forward or rear facing. I know of a few Signed Honakers currently that have this exact guard.

Rare reverse barrel breechloading rifle.
Rightful liberty is unobstructed action according to our will within limits drawn around us by the equal rights of others. I do not add 'within the limits of the law' because law is often but the tyrant's will, and always so when it violates the rights of the individual.

Maybe he sold it as a Jamestown gun and the buyer reneged on the purchase.
