I just crawled from under my model T....don't they shoot 22 rimfire in the Olympics? I haven't heard about patched round balls being used in the Olympics.

You are correct, except that muzzleloaders and BP cartridge rifles are shot in various national and international competitions and the procedure carries over to those barrels as well.

Don G- Appreciate your perspective and from the research I have done I am well aware that there is quite a diversity in Jaeger rifles, just like the many styles of Kentucky Long Rifles. That said, I could still use a suggestion as to someone who is good and specialises in that building style.

Appreciate all the info on Barrel suppliers. I have actually found a few that will provide what I am looking for with pretty short delivery times so I don't think that is going to be any sort of an impediment to this build. I am still looking hard though for people that specialize in building Jaegers. I have sent an inquiry to Sitting Fox ML to see if they can supply their Jaeger Kit in Left hand configuration. That would at least give me a good starting point, never know, might just have to build it my self. Looks like I am going to have some free time over this winter that I hadn't originally thought I would.

I just have to say……..I build instruments. [ and sometimes long rifles ] and this is a perfect example of why I don't do much "custom" work anymore. I build my models, which I designed and if you want to order one…great. If not, that's fine too. Getting old I guess

I have been faced with a similar dilemma...I have to build a left handed Jaeger for a little Swiss lassie. So I went to my reference works and found a nice rifle in a book that had a lock I thought I could replicate fairly closely. The lock is an L & R Classic ( I think) in left hand. With a little judicious filing, and a considerable amount of internal work (more about that if you're interested), I have a lock that'll work on this new build. Here's a pic of the lock with the photo of the original I wish to emulate, and one of the interior of the lock.

Thanks for the quality information like you always post.

I have been emailing back and forth with Ray Franks at Sitting Fox. They are just in the process of finishing off a left hand Jaeger kit and one of the things they are looking at is a LH Siler lock with a custom plate to more closely match the Jaeger classic look, so sounds like something similar to what you are looking at doing. I am going to talk to Frank next week to get down to brass tacks and specific details but if the kit is as good as it sounds, the $1000 price with 31" swamped barrel, brass or Steel furniture, dovetails and lugs done, optional sliding patch box and proper lock then I think this will make a real good starting point for a Left Hand Jaeger build. I don't think I could assemble the parts individually for much less and having a pre-inlet stock should save a lot of time.

If this works out it should make a pretty fun build. Thanks all for your help.

Let me say, there aren't too many kits that can be finished into a historically accurate, high quality finished firearm. So if this is a goal, you might want to consider this. It would be wise to ask a lot of questions, from knowledgeable folks before making any decisions.

I totally agree with the ask lots of questions part but the part about kits not finishing into quality guns that are PC correct I am having trouble digesting. A lot of the top builders start with kits from Chambers, Pecatonnia, The Rifle Shoppe etc and are turnig out top notch work.

A rice Barrel, Davis Trigger, Chambers lock and quality cast parts are the same whether bought as a kit or put together individually ordered. There are darn few builders making all of their parts from scratch and I don't see that as necessary to turning out a PC, quality built rifle. The key would seem to be getting the parts right, and having the skill to shape and fit the stock to the correct architecture, as well as having a period pattern to build to.

We aren't talking about a Lyman GPR kit here so I am at a loss to see why a good quality kit is an inferior start, unless I am really missing something with respect to the quality of kits that are being turned out.

Yes, I believe you are missing something regarding MOST of the kits being turned out. There are some good ones, but the remainder leave a great deal to be desired. I'll avoid naming companies in this post. Ask lots of questions...

Okay, I think I now understand. Thank you very much for the heads up, I will pay very close attention as I have never dealt with this company before. I think that may have been what Mike Brooks was hinting at with his response above about " Yep, that is exactly I would do

". Got to pay a little more attention and read between the lines better, I though it was just a humorous shot because he is such a good builder he would never consider using a kit.

And, I'm not above building kits, do it all the time.
Something to consider, and I'm not trying to be an A-hole....how about a left handed gun with a right handed lock? Historically correct. I've built a couple and the guys that own them are pleased.I'll have to look at my web site and see if I have pics of one there . To be honest, I've never been pleased with any left handed lock on the market.

The great thing about email and phone is you can find out a lot of stuff that isn't on websites. Pecatonnia has confirmed that they will produce their Jaeger stock in left hand and will supply the rest of the parts (AKA KIT) for a left handed Jaeger. They did say they don't have any 31" swamped barrels in stock so don't know what delivery time would be to get the barrel in to inlet the stock to but all in, having a top quality supplier like Pecatonnia as another choice is a very good thing.

Nice to see some of the quality suppliers being willing to produce a wider selection for us southpaws.

If now your gonna build it than read some books on building, buy a chamber builders lock, plank, barrel, and furniture etc...than oh some "good" files, chisels, vice, rasps etc... And go at it, by the time your done you probably won't have what you are looking for, and you'll be right in at your budget! If what you want is a proper Jaeger, get the right builder. A precarve or kit isn't any better unless the builder knows what he is doing. For the type of builder you want they can do it themselves without having to be restricted.
