Does this finish need to be neutralized with bicarbonate of soda - particularly if the finish is applied to the inlets? Thanks

I didn't neutralize the stain, though I never do when using iron nitrate (aqua fortis) alone, either. I don't find the need to neutralize. I'm certain it won't hurt anything if you do.
