Ed Rayl barrels
« on: December 08, 2014, 02:39:30 AM »
Does anyone have an idea on how long of a wait there is when ordering barrels from Mr. Rayl?
I have had several on order for quite some time.Others I have had made by Ed usually arrived in six to eight months.

I spoke with him last spring and he estimated 2 year backlog. I'm sure the time differs with the type of barrel you are after too. Plus I have zero idea what his current wait time is.

I would like to understand the barrel business and why anyone waits such a long time for particular makers  barrel. Is this just a brand name thing or is there proof of superior performance for a particular barrel maker? Is there a superior ( gun builder friendly) finish, an accuracy advantage or the fact that no one has had their barrel blow up in anyones face?
I am surprised that some young entrepreneurs don’t start a barrel shop. The tooling can’t be that difficult or expensive.

My first question would be, is this a custom profile and length and calibre? If so you have to realize the tooling set up that is required, one offs take more time. Ed is a great guy and he runs a one man shop, I am sure he is working toward getting your order completed.

If you are going to build rifles it is a good idea to order barrels well in advance of starting your project.  We are blessed to have some very good barrel makers and they work hard to meet our demand.

If you are getting in a bind give Ed a call and talk to him,  I am sure he will work with you if he can.

I asked Ed that very question back in October.   He said about a year, but is only working on custom orders, no stock work.  If you have been waiting more than a year,   I would call him.

As to why wait, well, you don't have a choice, frequently.   There is more demand than supply.   There are only but so many sets of equipment out there specifically designed to do this work, most from WWII.   If you want to get setup to do this work using modern equipment such as Rice has,  it is going to be very expensive and require some pretty good engineering and machining skills to setup the equipment to meet the needs of barrel making.   Even at that, the market just won't support much more than a one man shop.

The old joke is "How do you make a million dollars building guns?    Start with two million."

It's pretty common to wait a year. Some makers take longer, a few, less.

It doesn't hurt to check around with barrel makers. Sometimes they get stuck with a profile someone else reneged on :o , and you're laughing. I got just that lucky with John Getz for a 50" 28g smooth barrel. Rice seems to have barrels around when I need them.

If,I come across an available barrel, to my liking, I usually buy it.  I'm sure most of the other builders do the same??!!!!??
You end up keeping a few around, but darn if it don't come in handy sometimes. Helps plan for the future projects, and they are there if you need them in a hurry. Right now, I have I think 4.
But if you're wanting custom, you're gonna wait!!
Best turnarounds I know of right now, is FCI.  About 6 months.

I have delt with Ed several times and he has always delivered 2-3 weeks one way or the other from the target date, excellent in this hobby.  Call Ed up and talk this over.

May I suggest a 'WANTED' ad in our classified section? Ad costs nothing, and often yields fruit.

A good source for custom barrels is The Gun Works Muzzleloaders' Emporium http://www.thegunworks.com/custprodgun.cfm?SubCat1ID=9&Cat1Name=Barrels.  They make Oregon Barrels and are pretty quick but the size and style of barrels is pretty limited.

I guess a lot of the makers are getting behind schedule, I've been waiting 8 months on a straight octagon barrel from FCI.  But since Charlie said it would be 6 to 8 months wait when I ordered it, I planned it into my project schedule.

I just received a barrel last week from Ed after waiting two years.  It was a very specific custom size.

Have you called Ed, 304-364-8269? He can give you the answer to your question that no one here can.
