16 Bore L/H Maple Purdey Style Double Rifle
« on: December 14, 2014, 06:16:04 AM »
I didn't do a complete documentation of this build because it is a match for the 10 Bore L/H Maple Double Rifle I built last year. I fully documented that build in detail so I didn't see a lot of reason to repeat all the same steps again.

Here are the final pictures.

I'm very happy with the way the regulation came out.

The pair together.

I like them both but dont think I'm man enough to shoot the 10 bore. Can you give us some specs on the guns. Length of pull, drop, barrel maker and twist rate and depth, etc. It looks like they shoot pretty close.

Smiley, at one time I would have fired them upon invitation, but with my spinal wear and tear, I would have to decline now.

Real nice Colin.. I've got a question. In a double big bore like these, is there any issue with the load in the second barrel sliding forward from recoil?

You obviously know what you are doing!  Those are a remarkable accomplishment - I applaud you.

I do have a question though about the architecture...is not the drop at comb and heel rather extreme?  It appears to be around 2 3/4" at the comb and over 4" at the heel.  To my eye and experience, that equates to profound felt recoil and barrel rise.  I would have thought that a comb line that is almost parallel to the bore(s) would serve better.  I'm interested in your comments and opinions on that subject.

There's no taking away from the workmanship...that is for certain.

Those would make dandy crew served weapons. Your craftsmanship is most excellent. Love'em.

Being a lefty I think you have the triggers backwards.  ???  With my fat fingers I find the usual "right" set up very easy to use and naturally cock the right hand lock first.  Otherwise I really like the pair.  ;D

Nice guns. My neck would break and my head would fall off on the ground and roll away if I shot one.

I also wondered about what seemed to be an unusual amount of drop at the heel of the stock.I had a sxs Greener 16 bore rifle that had little drop and was easy to shoot..As I recall it liked 90 grains of DuPont 3fg and a patched ball of about 660 diameter.

Thanks for the compliments guys.

They are tight patched, and the balls seem to stay seated well. If you shoot just one barrel and then reload and shoot, it is a good idea to check the load but if you shoot a L and a R like the gun is designed for I've never had a problem with the ball coming off the powder.

The customer already had a bespoke(fitted rifle) built for him before he commissioned me to build these, so I had hime send me the measurements off of it as well as the standard set of measurements that I have all of my customers take off their bodies, after comparing the measurements I questioned the fit as well but he told me that the fitted rifle he had was perfect so I built to his measurements  with a few minor tweaks for double rifle handling and he tells me that they fit him perfectly...usually the math(body measurements and formulas) works but in this case apparently not. He's happy though and that's really all that matters to me.

This 10 Bore RH Double I built last year probably looks more like what you would expect in a typical double:

Specs:
the 10 bore weighs about 14 pounds, has 26" barrels(Joe Williams) .775" with .010" groove with a slow twist for patched round ball.
the 16 Bore weighs about 12 pounds has 28" barrels(Joe Williams) .669" with .010" groove slow twist for patched round ball.

The 10 Bore is stout to shoot with the 250gr FFg regulation load but nothing a normal guy can't handle a dozen shots in a row. The 16 Bore though with the 150gr FFg regulation load is a pure dream to shoot.

These are fine looking rifles. And they shoot well to boot. I have often wondered how the regulating of a double rifle was achieved.

This video shows some of the process of regulating along with fine examples of what goes into creating a well crafted shotgun.
