Five More Days.
« on: December 18, 2014, 09:32:31 PM »
Just got a message that my Tn Poorboy has been shipped; delivery date is Tues, 23rd.  I'm looking at 5 days of misery until then.  I'll post pics when it arrives.  The barrel is from Rice and the lock from Chambers.

Great timing.  When I knew my colonial flinter was on the way, I practically counted the minutes, and even arranged to pick it up at the UPS location so I wouldn't have to wait another few hours.  It was like Christmas and birthday combined, and I brought it home and stared at it for a few days.  Enjoy!

Merry Christmas.  I'd be excited.  Are you sure you've been a good enough boy, or has there been a mixup?

It's not so much whether I've been good or bad; it's just that Santa and I haven't seen eye to eye for several decades.

Are you tracking it?

I had something get mis-routed out of a hub once...added 3 days to the delivery!

Congratulations, is the camera/studio ready for pics to share?  What bore?  How long is bbl?  How poor? (what is missing?).  Fun fun fun.

The waiting.    :-[

There hope that helps.  ;D

There will be pics posted.  It's a Tn poorboy with a Chambers late Ketland flint lock, a Rice swamped x .32 x 38" x radius grooved barrel.  The barrel was recommended by Jason and I already have some Chambers locks so no recommend was needed.  The stock is plain maple stained "honey brown" and the hardware is, ready for this?  Brass.  The lock has two lock bolts chosen because of advice from an honored member here which was the mark of the earliest SMR.

Issat the "standard" A-wt or a Squirrel or a Southern contour?

Sounds handy and dandy.

It arrived today.  Yes it is rather stunning for a poorboy.  I took a few pics and will try to get them posted tomorrow.

The rifle has an "A" weight barrel; a Rice "transition series", I believe.  Noticeably heavier than my .36 SMR but much lighter than I expected.  It has a more "solid" feel to it than the bee bee gun weight of the little SMR.  I shall start, now, trying to get some pics posted.  Don't mind critiquing but discourage mindless bashing.

Finally figured out the pic posting protocol so here (I hope) are some decent pics.

I like the counterbore at the muzzle.

Stock is nicely striped.

Late Ketland lock.

I thought I'd just let everyone decide who the builder is, if they like.  I chose brass since it's suppose to represent an earlier rifle and not one from, say, the peak of the fur trade time line.  Also I knew brass would look great.  Comments and civil critiques are welcomed.  Hope to make it to the range today.

Lock panel is a bit large for my taste. That civil enough?  ??? ;D ???

I'm curious about the muzzle. I don't recall seeing that before. Is the intent to protect the crown? It still looks sharp to me. Have you fired it yet to be able to check the patches?

The muzzle crown is a first for me, too.  It should negate the tiny ball falling off just when you want to short start it.  The comment about the lock panel is right on, IMHO.  But the late Ketland is a tiny lock and it really doesn't bother me.  There were other choices but I liked what I've read about the Ketland.  Hope to shoot it today.

Well I'm not going to be civil.   Beautiful rifle Hanshi!!!  I like its lines and the brass sets it off perfectly but your pics don't do it justice.

So, who the heck taught you how to take a picture?

You're fired as a picture taker and picture poster. Find some other line of work.

Crawdad is so cruel.  An easy way to even out the lighting is to use white cards to "bounce" light on areas not well covered by whatever light source you're using, or simply use two lights shining from the sides at 45 degree angles.  If you don't have a spot meter, something in the digital era that few people use, squint your eyes to see the darker areas better.
