Anybody have experience with this lock?

Is it dependable? I guess I should ask, does it work?

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

I believe, and I could be wrong, that that is the heir to a lock originally built by Ron Long.  If so, I have used an earlier version of it and found it to work quite well.
The gun that it is on has not gotten any heavy use, so I can't comment on the long term reliability.  But I would use one again if it fit the project.

Have used these for 25 years from Ron Long through Davis, great lock for light rifles and pistols, Herschel, Steve Davis used on their squirrel rifles.  Can round tail, engrave to match old locks. You'll see them all through old Muzzleloader articles.  A Leman rifle and several pistols still working fine after 20 years, used on some arms for last Alamo movie. Nice balance in springs, lock does not eat flints.  Picked up two more from Tim at CLA this year.

If you watch the video of the lock in action, you'll see the frizzen bounce back and hit the flint . Do they all do that ?   The Early English lock doesn't seem to do it.    It is the one I'm familiar with.

 Mike,
I have used a couple of them on Western PA "Fleeger" rifles.  They were the right style and seemed to work well, I would not hesitate to use one again if I had an order for a similar rifle.

Larry Zornes is involved with this one. I've had nothing but good things to say about his work.

Mike,

I have one for a future build and I can't believe how well it functions right out of the package.  A real sparker.  I've snapped it many, many times for a couple years to demo the flintlock mechanism to Scouts and others and have never been disappointed with the show.

I think Larry Zornes makes most of the locks R. E. Davis sells now. Never used that lock but I have used other M&G ( Larry Zornes ) locks and was very happy with them........Al

Mike  I had a Steve Davis squrriel rifle that he built in 1985? that had Rons version of that look and it worked perfectly .The springs seem weak compared to Chambers looks .but It was a neat lock .Steve does some really neat work .Curt

Mike,
i also have used this lock many many times on Leman builds,
never had a issue, as do all locks they require a bit of tuning,
had a couple say its a bit hard to get powder in the pan,
but its never been a real big issue
only flintlocks remain interesting..

Mike I used that lock on a fowling gun I made for a friend in GA and it is the smoothest fastest lock I have ever used.  I am quite impressed. Required just the standard polishing and tuning.  Very tight and smooth mechanics.  I use this and the Chambers late Ketland  interchangeably depending on the look I want.   The bolster is shorter toward the rear than the Ketland if I remember correctly.

Very fast and dependable lock. Worked great right from the start.

I put one on a Southern Mountain rifle. It is one of the best locks I have ever used.

Boy, after watching that video, it sure looks like that lock would eat flints. The frizzen bounces back hard enough to make additional sparks.
I guess it could be just a self-knapping lock!?!?

Oh the stories the high speed camera tells!  If I recall, most locks that have been tested rebound.

Yeah, only the ones with the flints put in upside down hit.

If you study all the flintlocks that Pletch did, you will see a commonality amongst the flint crushers that is pretty much limited to one brand and it has to do with the final resting place of the cock after it's tripped.

Thanks all. I'll probably use one on my squirrel rifle. I miss squirrel hunting. I'll have to make it a real dog so nobody buys it for a few years. ;D

I have that lock in kit form I picked up a while back. It has type written and mimeographed instruction sheet and spare parts list from "Long Locks, Silver Fox Trading Co." I haven't built it yet but thinking about using it on a southern style, maybe squirrel rifle.

Bought this lock at Friendship back in the 80s and gave it to Jack Garner way back then for an English sporting rifle build. I've literally touched off thousands of rounds with this lock with no problems. It's easy on flints and fast. About the only thing done was "gently grinding" the face of the frizzen to smooth it back up. I have a spare frizzen if I ever need it.
Flintlock is the only truly reliable source of ignition in a muzzle loader.

Let's see the back side of the plate.THAT is where the lock is.
