The use of the pan grinder was discussed in an old topic: Flashpan Grinder HDTDT

The use of the grinder gave a functional if somewhat ugly pan recess.  But, we cannot learn how the old time gunsmiths worked unless we actually try to use the old tools, materials and techniques even if the result is not equal to what can be done today with a Bridgeport mill and a carbide cutter.

A TEMPLATE  or relevant dimensions /pattern of a rough cut /shaped stock with basic inletting
 will help enormously
 guessing that curve of butt into barrel support section --looks like 220 degrees?
thick- ness of wrist ----trigger to end of butt distance -or trigger"pull " makes no sense
 trigger pull = 14 inches ?
thought trigger full rated in lbs--must be 18 th cent jargon
hundreds od dimensions of that stock ---badly needed --

pity to ruin a nice piece of year -old seasoned  mahogany--- by stupid guessing from fotos

must be  something available---?

We mean length of pull Charly,  hook a tape measure onto trigger go straight back to butt plate--thats trigger pull.  Most people can use 13"-14" pull....You need a good book on gunmaking, million questions will be answered in it....Tom

 HAD no idea trigger pull was  the length from butt to trigger
ie 13 -14 inches --see how stupid a novice I am ---trigger pull amongst us pro hunters is
normally the force to release a trigger --ie 4  to 5 POUNDS OF FINGER FORCE !

what on earth is wrong with measuring or tracing an outlinline of a exisiting long rifle STOCK
 AND simple measuring  all relevant parts -ie wrist /butt width --lock area width /height

so I can begin to cut the stock from a mahogany beam I  saved a year ago --

but --I HAVE NOT A CLUE OR A PROFILE TEMPLATE TO WORK FROM
  a few dimensions --yes6 ft long ----12 wide --4 inches thik beam

 but that sleek curve angle ---( love the logo for ALR  stock-- ANYTHING SIMILAR ??

 PLEASE BWANA -- HELP !

Track wolf has full size plans in stock, or yes trace a gun that fits you and go from that, I do it all time.  If you have a long rifle it will be worth a 1000 pictures.  I started this learning process by having a store bought reproduction long rifle for a pattern.   Tom

Be patient Carl.   I am working on some full size templates to send you.    I would put up a .pdf for you if I thought you had a large format printer available to print it, but I am pretty sure you don't.    When I get everything redrawn in CAD,  I will send you a couple of copies.

but practise nevertheless--- gives me confidence --lotsa crooked cut trees everywhere

got one Kentucky home made template   long rifle  look-alike-STOCK---cut out ---  almost like this LOGO  on ALR     fair wrist/comb/ ch  curve -cheek piece etc ---bit rough -
but its too short --5 ft --but I got that SLEEK WRIST CURVE  like your longrifle pics
--dead on ---feels good ---@!*% -hard work
additionally have taught myself to sharpen blunt-chain saw blades---rather pricy in  Africa-

dying to learn inletting /carving and shaping gouging --those books you sent me
have me all the more intrigued--driven to new levels I never thought possible-

I have warthog tusk variety sliced flat pieces --cut into all shapes ( stars ) etc -
to be used as inlays(only when a higher standard is achieved-)-

been a fascinating journey so far ---very grateful for all the amazing  help /encouragement I got on this forum
 special thanks to  Mark  Elliot----has never wavered in his support ---
( only wish I had discovered this delightful craft 30 yrs ago
but its never too late---

 that TRADE RIFLE -- FOTO  --the first illustration on track  of wolf catalog
 plans etc
 is absolutely astounding -------Exactly what I would carve out of African LIGHT TEAK

  -called  Mukwa /  or  Mulombwa in Zambia / Congo/ Malawi  Zim-( pterocarpus Angolensis ) hard fine grained premier furniture  light --multicolored --
timber --found all over central Africa savanah ---but getting scarce due to illegal de-forestation
 looks a lot like Walnut when sanded /polished etc--THE   completed stock should be quite unique ---
so -----will hang on till  Mark sends me a template

very NICE paintings!!!!!!!!!!!..............my father painted close to your style~ a gift!

one suggestion~ make a proto type lock out of wood-plastic, brass, even aluminum~ to get your parts fitting right....MUCH easier than steel trial and error~~~I made a 1888 Marlin lifter from nylon, then aluminum then when it was working right....had the steel one done~~~

proto type parts are much easier to make 1st~then you have a working full scale lock...copy in steel~

never dawned on me to create a plastic or aluminium prototype --

stupid me  got into so much trouble with all kinds of heavy steel
made a huge mess 7 months ago --trying to copy a lock from fotos --sans dimensions

should have done more research ---
even thin plywood would have bolted 2 getha easily --to give me a good understanding
--never had the luck to hold an actual flintlock or long rifle ---

 my dream was shattered temporarily --till I got into this  ALR  site ---
 the critics were spot on --ths the best forum by far ----for novice idiots trying to jump ahead

got a hard lesson --this is far harder than I imagined
but -----if someone had said --its bloody difficult -give up now --?
where would I be ? 
 all my 24 failures --one success ----proves u learn by tripping up

 -- has awesome lines /curve /looks etc ---that's ---exactly what I am ready to cut

-- PS  my 27 th attempt at a strong mainspring --resulted in the cock hammer smashing
 into my index finger into frizzen with a force --that after asking many questions on how to measure
the force /tension /strike power of a home made mainspring ---was revealed quite agonisingly
---smashed the finger--blood-everywhere---nuff said ---huge spark --almost shatters flint ---and fingers--

progress so far ---
my beloved  Pennsylvania RIFLE STOCK   I have cut shaped 3 times -( novice)
has now become a TRANSYLVANIA WOODEN HORROR--

  ok ---I tried --4 th time lucky--
simply copying every foto available
that angle of wrist to forearm ---by the way --scale up with a simple protractor
 = 150 DEGREES  obtuse angle---
finally --it looks antique  really pleased--carved cheekpiece /comb
blew the side plate inletting --clumsy --
start again --bigger side plate to cover the ragged hole-
l
not easy ---but its fascinating---
I am not alone ---many like me struggle --
small victories are rewarding enuf---reading gun building problems on this forum is very enlightening --hugely educational ---
