rasps
« on: January 31, 2015, 11:58:30 PM »
I have a couple of rasps that I really love to work with.  They cut hard maple fast and clean, with lots of control.  The first is a half round that must be very much like a Nicholson 49 or 50...perhaps someone here can fill me in on that.  It is made by Black Diamond in Canada.

This second one is just a magic thing!  It is a rat tailed rasp about 3/8" dia and about 12" long.  It seems to stay sharp forever and again, cuts wonderfully well without the slightest tearing.  It is made by Nicholson.

Taylor,
Is Black Diamond still made in Canada today? I have a few BD files but they aren't for wood work.
Oddly enough,I have recently bought rat tail files from Harbor Freight and Home Depot that are really
good. Not doubt made in China but they seem to work'

I don't know Bob.  I've had a good store of files for a very long time, and draw upon the stash as I need them.  I bought the rat tail file in a tool store many years ago...can't even remember where in town it was...but I did buy a new flat single cut mill bastard about two years ago from one of our local suppliers, and was told it was Chinese, but of good quality.  He was right.  it is very sharp, hard, and continues to be a great file.  So not all off-shore stuff is junk.

Can anyone comment on the similarity or difference between my rasp and a Nicholson 49/50?

They just like some of the ones I use....,you can bend them to get into areas tighter than you straight rasps....the handmade ones are the best, but $$$$ and the Japanese make SUPER nice planes to cut the rasped areas.......sigh, once again $$$$$$$$$$$......

" but honey, I have all these tools, I HAVE to out in the shop to make stuff...tell you what, let me take you out to eat tonight" ...... :-*

THAT get said a lot I bet!

Taylor - I have a couple of new 49's and 50's.  I'll bring one of each along next time I' headed your way and you can compare them with what you have.

Hi Taylor,

I believe the black diamond rasp was made by Nicholson in Canada in the good old days and had a higher carbon content than their regular rasps. As far as I know they are no longer being made anywhere. I have a few black diamond files, not rasps...I get a couple of local tool guys to funnel them my way when they come across them at garage/estate sales.
The teeth on the patternmakers rasps are set randomly like hand-raised teeth.

Having very little actual "proper wood rasp" experience, but learning much more about using one as I hoof rasped my last stock--I just remembered that Dennis had sold me a NOS Nicholson #50 recently.

So I dug it out to finish squaring up some walnut to make a tool.  Another piece of firewood, nabbed away for shop purposes.

And it's a wonderful tool. Just too easy, feels like a quantum leap. Like how it cuts and feels in the hand (half a pound lighter eh ::) ) and and and a curved surface too. Very pleased.  Thanks Dennis!

Taylor,
I picked up a Red Tang file by Heller, brand new, at a flea market. Looks just like your half round but is flat. Paid $5.00 for it and wish the guy had a half dozen more.

Taylor,
I believe that I would just about give up a body part for a rasp like that rat tail model LOL  ;)

I think if one really wants a quality rasp, that Liogier in France is likely the best bet. I should start saving $$$ now!

you ask me - if I can send the tool to the US?  - Of course, I can do .

I am waiting for a reply from the office factory - probably is the American distributor.

Tim:  that is a great looking rasp.  It may be perhaps a bit finer cut than mine, but I think it would serve well.

Taylor,
A couple years back, I spent WAY too much for a hand stitched Swiss Patternmakers rasp.  I think it was like $80 ?  Thing is amazing!  Smooth, fast. Cuts wood like butter, and leaves a smooth surface.
Well worth the cost!!!!
