Did the 18th century gunsmith and how?

Say, a man has a swamped barrel put into a straight channel, for example...is it never or just rare?

  Doesn't make a lot of sense, unless the straight channel is the width of the waist of the swamped barrel, and there is still  enough wood at the breech to allow the lock to be inlet fully.

Barrel bedding unheard of in the 18th Century, in my limited knowledge.  I've seen plenty of inlets for swamped barrels done with a round plane. Bottom of the barrel channel is round.

That little sliver of wood that surrounds the barrel, AKA forestock, can barely hold its own shape without a barrel in it. In the 18th Century style of gun, the BARREL is the STRUCTURE.

It's better than mine! HA! I use plastic/steel epoxy's to give a perfect steel to wood fit.
