SxS project

I started this project a while back and have determined to get it done this year. My first SXS flinter. The barrels are 16 ga. X 30 inch Belgium b-loader barrels. They are 2 inches across at the breech so I will need a min. 2 3/4 inch wide stock blank....I think...any advice?...except..."don't"

i have a piece of walnut thats 3" thick
never got around to making anything from it
be perfect for SXS
its plain no figure

I am planning a SXS build myself.

I called Dunlap and spoke to Daniel. Told him I needed a 2 3/4 inch piece of dense walnut. 3 days later I had a perfect piece, 2 7/8 inches thick, sitting on my front step.  It is American walnut, but this piece is real hard. Hopefully it will checker OK.

Try giving them a call and see if they have any more.

Captchee, As you can see I have TWO sets of breech plugs, and two sets of barrels that because I sure expect to FUBAR up one!!!!!!

you know i completely missed seeing that 2nd , smaller plug. judging by your work so far . i doubt you will screw it up

KL, I used 3/4 -16....It cut real good in the. 16.8 mm (.66142 ) barrels,  lots of oil and cut it slow......The specs say you need a .6875 hole to tap 3/4 16 but the general tap size guides only give 75% full thread and I wanted a closer thread fit. I also used an adjustable die to make the plugs a little larger in dia. I now have a real good snug thread fit with no clearance at all...it worked for me...Ed

A 12 gauge will need a 7/8" x 14 tap and die.

Hmmm, so did you cut the entire chamber off of the breech, making your cut just ahead of the forcing cone?

It looks like you have a good start.  I would recess the breeches to give a slimmer profile.

These were NOS barrels that had never been chambered.....

Using recessed breeches requires locks with specific frizzen geometry to be correct. Typical rifle locks will work (sort of) but you really do need the proper locks to go recessed. If using typical rifle locks, then a tapered breech would be more suitable.

It's about time you did something with those barrels Ed! Of course, I can't say too much because I've had my Swivel Breech barrels back for at least 4 months now and haven't done a thing to them yet. Your Breech plugs look real nice though. Sounds like that Walnut stock would be about perfect. Since I moved to central Missouri last year I sure miss coming by and visiting with you. Keep us posted with some pics!

I don't know of any commercial locks being offered that are suitable for recessed breeches other than castings taken from originals. For recessed breeches you want locks with a long throw from frizzen face to pivot pin so when the frizzen opens it lifts clear of the barrel. The Manton shown earlier shows this well. Here are a pair of locks that i was doing for a SXS that shows clearly how the high pivot point and long throw lifts the frizzen fairly straight up rather than up and back like a short throw rifle lock where the barrel would interfere with the frizzen unless relieved.

BTW, I had done a tutorial on breaching barrels for a SXS flint but have no idea what ever happened to it.
