Antique guns in Huntington,WV museum?
« on: February 11, 2015, 03:50:21 PM »
I know Bob Roller will know. Does the Huntington Museum have on display their gun collection. I have lived here all my life and never visited. Is it worth a trip?

Great guns and awesome powder horns. Can't believe all the times I have been down that way, and it wasn't until few years back we stopped on the way  from the Lexington Show. We really enjoyed it.

Did they publish a catalog of the Herman Dean collection some years ago? Seems like I remember such, but I could be mistaken.

I don't remember ever seeing that rifle with such a radical drop in the stock.

Bob
I remember the SimonMiller rifle from when you took me over there.  It does not have the extreme drop indicated in the picture. Must just be distortion from the angle taken

Don is right, I looked at the Simon Miller rifle very close since I used to own one. It did not have that much drop. This museum makes a good stop for those on their way to Lexington KY for the CLA show from the east. Its not far off I-64 and only takes a short time to view the collection. We have stopped at least twice and its always enjoyable.

Did Simon Miller work in that area?  I thought he was an Upper Susq guy.

It is YOUR Simon Miller. The exhibit is not specific to Huntington rifles.

Yes they did C 1980. They may still have some at the museum. There are a couple pix of the Miller rifle in it.
I wonder how much more of the collection they have that is not on display.

Thanks, Tim. I thought I'd seen a catalog of the collection, but don't remember what was in it. Assuming the museum still has all of Dean's collection, I would say there are a lot of guns not on display.

I have one of his rifles in my collection. I have a picture of him in his library, he's holding what appears to be a Niehart rifle, next to him is a circular rack filled to the gills with Longrifles. Next to his right leg is the rifle I have clear as day in the rack.

That Simon  Miller rifle is on page 23 of the book.

One of the horns on display is also in the book, page 57"
"Ebenezer Polley His Horn 1776 Made in New York by E. P.
"Ebenezer Polley's horn of 1776 has incorporated the saying, "I POWDER WITH MY BROTHER BAWL USE ME RITE AND KELT THAM ALL". This inscription, and its numerous variants, was a favorite saying of the period, for it appears on a number of horns"

On page 71 it reads " Additional contemporary firearms are currently in storage, and will be exhibited on a rotating basis.
