I just finished this Shimmel for my 11 year old daughter who plans on hunting squirrels and rabbits and such next season. Based on a Lehigh Valley common rifle it sports a 25" 24 gauge smoothbore barrel that I hand fashioned out of a round barrel blank, a small Siler lock, single cold forged trigger, brass hardware on a nice stick of curly maple. She weighs in at a whopping 3 lbs.!!!

Thanks Tom. Now she's bugging me to shoot it but it's so dang cold. Maybe this weekend, it's supposed to be in the 30s

Aw, G. R.,
That is really nice. But...she will out grow in a lightning flash. Ask me how I know this.
I built a lovely English rifle for my son's twelfth birthday. By his thirteenth birthday he couldn't hit anything with it because he couldn't tell where his longer arms and neck were. I had to add two and a half inches to the butt.
Oh, my. Well, she can give it to her daughter or son.

It has a 12.5 LOP and my daughter is just a little thing. It will take her a while to out grow it if she even does. Heck, it's even comfortable for me.

That baby girl has a very fine heirloom to someday pass on to her family.
That is a fine little gun and one any of us would be proud to have in our
collection.

That is a very fine little gun and sure hope she is proud of it. I have two youth rifles in the works for my grandsons they are 7 and 9. When they out grow them i will build them a full size, just a reason i have to build another rifle

That's the point, to bring as many youngsters into this sport as we can and help them appreciate the history that made this country what it is.

I built one for my son but he outgrew it way too fast. He want's to keep it for his son some day.

She's 11 and wants to shoot her rifle. Do you live in an area where she can shoot from the
porch? Humor her,load in the house ,prime out side and cut loose.

We have plans to shoot this Sunday. In the mean time we'll do a little classroom instruction coupled with some dry runs.

I'm gong to start out with 25 - 30 grains of 2F with an over powder wad, 1/2 ounce of shot followed by an over shot wad. Then we'll work from there. Being at 3 lbs, the last thing I want is to have the rifle kill on both ends.

thanks for posting pictures. These projects really get me excited. I was able to make it out to the shop for the first time in several months the other night. I was shaping a rifle for my son who is 6.
I can image all the memories you will share with this rifle.

Thanks Micah2, as far as a barrel choice I didn't have much to choose from that was light weight. I found these round barrel blanks at a local shop for $35. I re shaped them to a semi oct/round, tapped and breeched with a 5/8x18 and she's good to go. My daughter is just a tiny thing so I wanted short and light. The barrel is tapered so much it gives the gun the illusion of being long.
